The Gallery was formed on October 1, 1943 and incorporated on June 8, 1944 with the mandate of serving the southwestern Ontario region and the international border community of Windsor, Ontario, Canada and Detroit, Michigan, USA. In the intervening years, it has become a cultural pillar situated in a premium and purpose-built downtown riverfront location overlooking the Detroit River and downtown skylines.

Time: 7:30PM to 8PM Location: Second floor galleries Alejandro Tamayo: At the Moment This Work is Like This October 17, 2024 - February 2, 2025 At the Moment This Work is Like This features new works by Windsor-based Alejandro Tamayo that examines how context influences the way that we perceive objects and spaces. By bringing parts of his studio into the gallery, Tamayo invites us to reflect on how context can shift what we see and how we engage with it. Throughout his career, Tamayo has been interested in how meaning is transformed, and how an object becomes art when placed in the context of an exhibition. The second public art commission for the #GordieHoweBridge project, Aazhoge, is now being installed! Created by Anishinaabe artist Michael Belmore, this 3-metre sculpture reflects the traditions of local Indigenous communities. You can also see a model of Aazhoge on view now in our Love Languages exhibition until October 27.

Art Windsor-Essex partnered with the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board and their Indigenous Student Success Coach to display artwork created by students across Windsor-Essex. 🎨 Bezhig Miigwan / One Feather symbolizes the resilience of Indigenous Peoples and our shared commitment to truth and reconciliation. Each feather represents a survivor, a lost child, and the connection we all share. Have you caught Marc on the CBC last week talking about our new program? 🎨📻🎙️ “This program is for kids of all ages, about the curious, imaginative person inside of all of us – exercising creative capacity, STEAM knowledge, ecological awareness, future literacy, and how civil engagement can be done. Sandwich is one of the most storied neighborhoods in the city; involved in the war of 1812, the Underground Railroad, the Ambassador Bridge, it carries significant local history. The idea is to inspire people to think differently about Sandwich, which is on the cusp of a big change with the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and the new urban national park on its doorstep. This program will help the residents see that potential and be active in trying to make a better world for everyone.” – Marc Ngui, Program Director. Sandwich Visionaries is an after-school, drop-in arts program designed for school-aged children in Sandwich Town BIA and West Windsor. This initiative will engage participants in creative activities that highlight local history and culture. In collaboration with community groups, the Windsor Public Library John Muir Branch, University of Windsor Centre for Cities (C4C) and the Sandwich Towne BIA, the program aims to celebrate the individuals who have shaped the neighborhood’s history and provide participants with the skills to help shape its future. The 24-week program will take place in community spaces and local schools, with additional workshops held at BIA events to engage with a diverse, multi-generational audience. Funding for this program has been provided by WDBA-APWD Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan!
