Could sand, molten salt, and concrete hold the key to harnessing and repurposing heat produced by nuclear reactors? It’s a question our researchers are aiming to answer through a three-experiment project exploring how thermal batteries could connect to a nuclear, renewable-hybrid energy system.

Thermal batteries – also called thermal energy storage systems – store excess heat produced when demand is low and then release it back into the grid for use when demand is high. They’ve been used in the energy industry for over a decade now and are known for levelling out the up-and-down nature of energy demands, reducing energy costs by harvesting what’s produced during lower-cost times of day, reducing CO2 emissions, and, overall, providing a more flexible, more reliable energy supply. 

This video captures one of three experiments designed to understand how heat produced by a nuclear reactor could be stored and repurposed for residential, commercial, or industrial heating applications. 

Led by Reactor Safety Scientist Eric Dening Jia, PhD, the Silica Sand Thermal Battery Experiment is specifically examining sand’s ability to store high-grade heat. Watch the video below to learn more and click the link in the comments to learn more about the broader CEDIR project.

Although we will miss all the camp fun, we had an incredible three weeks at the CNL Science Summer Camp!  

From hands-on activities to thrilling discoveries, each day was filled with curiosity and exploration. 

On Friday, we wrapped up the final week of camp with students from the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation and our local communities. Among the many cool activities at camp, students built balloon moon landings, saw hot cells, spent some time learning about species in our neighbourhood, all the work our passionate staff at CNL do and learned so much more about different kinds of science. 

It’s exciting to see so many students interested in #STEM, and CNL is glad to provide a platform for them to experiment with practical science. This hands-on approach encourages curiosity and fosters an interest in making discoveries. 

Thank you to everyone who helped this summer, including CNL staff who support the camps, Lets Talk Science Ottawa, The Society for the Preservation of Canada's Nuclear Heritage Inc. , Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, Town of Petawawa, and the Town of Deep River.
