It is with deep sadness that Confederation College acknowledges the passing of Senator Murray Sinclair, a remarkable Anishinaabe leader. Our thoughts are with his family and all those touched by his profound legacy. Senator Sinclair's unwavering commitment to truth, reconciliation, and justice has left an indelible mark on our nation. His leadership of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission brought to light the painful history of residential schools, fostering a path toward healing and understanding. We honour Senator Sinclair's tireless advocacy for Indigenous rights and education. His words, "Education got us into this mess. Education will get us out," continue to resonate and guide our approach to inclusive, culturally responsive education. At Confederation College in Thunder Bay, the number of new international students who enrolled this fall was down 39 per cent compared to a year ago. The college’s president, Michelle Salo, said this is the start of what she called “a very challenging era” for colleges in Canada. Confederation expects to lose millions in revenue, and that will mean an impact on the programs it can offer domestic students, she said. It has paused new hiring and put off a project to expand its training centre for trades. The college has run operating surpluses of about $12.5-million over the last two years, but that additional cushion will run out quickly, Ms. Salo said. She said by next year the financial consequences could be profound.

We had an amazing time hosting the Jill of All Trades event this week! The initiative aims to inspire young women to explore career possibilities in the trades. 💪🔨 More than 100 local female high school students spent the day on campus getting hands-on experience in carpentry, electrical work, welding, and other trades programs we offer. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible!

Confederation College is addressing the impact of recent IRCC changes, which have led to a significant decline in international student enrollment. The college has seen a 10% reduction in study permits for 2025 and stricter PGWP criteria, resulting in a 39% decrease in new international students for Fall 2024 compared to the previous year. President Michelle Salo highlighted the urgency of the situation, warning of a potential 69% decline without immediate action. The broader Ontario college system is greatly affected. 27% of Ontario job vacancies require College credentials. To mitigate these challenges, Confederation College is advocating for the restoration of PGWP-eligible programs and seeking provincial funding solutions. Despite the difficulties, the college remains committed to its role in education and workforce development in Northwestern Ontario. We're still reflecting on the incredible turnout at our annual Community Partners’ Evening on Wednesday. Thanks to the unwavering support of our community members, we far surpassed our fundraising goal, raising more than $95,000!
