✨ Celebrating World Food Day & Thanksgiving at Eva's! 🍂🥘 Yesterday, on October 16th, we came together at Eva's Phoenix to recognize World Food Day and share a Thanksgiving feast with our incredible youth and dedicated staff. 🍁💛 With love and teamwork, we prepared a warm, nourishing meal that reminds us of the power of community. When youth have their basic needs met—like a warm bed and a delicious meal—they can focus on what truly matters: their goals, dreams, and futures. 🌟 The evening was filled with laughter, games, and great food as we shared stories and strengthened our connections. Every moment together makes our community stronger.

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers from IDC Canada Events for creating housewarming kits and baking 12 pies for our Thanksgiving meal at Eva’s Phoenix! 🍂 Your generosity and care are helping our youth feel more at home this holiday season. 💛 We are so grateful for your support and the positive impact you’re making in the lives of Black youth experiencing homelessness. ✨

✨Building Financial Futures for Youth at Eva’s!✨ Financial setbacks can hit especially hard for youth experiencing homelessness. At Eva’s Phoenix and Youth Belong, we’re tackling this with our new Savings Program, helping young people develop financial literacy skills and save for their future. 💸 This initiative is part of our life skills programming, integrated into case management to make a real impact. And thanks to the amazing team at Checks Over Strikes—Dean Chambers and Craig Brown—youth get to engage with role models and learn invaluable lessons from their book Don’t Be a Waste Yute: The Financial Literacy Guide, now part of our move-in kits. 📖 We’re proud to embrace the seven principles of Kwanzaa, especially Ujamaa, cooperative economics. This program isn’t just about savings—it’s about empowering youth to build community wealth and connect with Black professionals. Our Ubuntu Bites program participants have been busy learning the journey from farm-to-table at Black Creek Community Farm !🐝 From exploring the market garden, beehives, and fruit trees 🍎, to harvesting their own fresh produce, these future leaders understand the true value of urban farming 🌿. On August 31st, we commemorated the end of Emancipation Month with an inspiring event at Toronto's City Hall, hosted by CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals in collaboration with the City of Toronto 's Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unit. This gathering celebrated Black entrepreneurs and community leaders while discussing strategies to empower the next generation of Black leaders. Shequita Thompson-Reid , Senior Director of Equity at Eva's, led a dynamic panel discussion focused on creating equitable work environments that foster inclusion. The insights shared by all keynote and panellists were invaluable in advancing conversations on equity and inclusion.

Over 70 incredible volunteers from The Home Depot Canada came together at Eva’s Place to give our 30-year-old emergency shelter a much-needed makeover! 🔨🏠 Their dedication and hard work have breathed new life into this space that so many youth call home. Their efforts focused on revitalizing key areas of Eva’s Place, from fresh paint and new flooring to updated common spaces, washers and dryers, and a newly furnished kitchen area. Outside, they created a beautiful garden and refreshed the basketball court, ensuring the space is comfortable, welcoming, and functional for the youth who call Eva’s Place home. 🌻🎨 This annual Community Build marks another milestone in our 17-year partnership with The Home Depot Canada Foundation (THDCF), and we couldn’t be more grateful. ❤️ Thank you to all the volunteers who travelled from across the GTA and beyond to make this happen. On August 31st, we observed International Overdose Awareness Day, embracing this year's theme, "Together We Can," to underscore the strength of community in combating overdose. Eva's Satellite, Canada's first harm reduction facility specifically for youth, remains committed to providing comprehensive support. Our services include Naloxone training for staff and residents, access to safe equipment, mental health support, case management, and a variety of programs tailored to young people's needs. Our dedicated harm reduction workers adapt their approach to each individual's journey, from harm reduction strategies to addiction counselling. This personalized support helps youth navigate their unique paths toward recovery and stable housing. Eva's will continue to collaborate closely with a range of external partners, including Toronto Public Health, various medical services, and community organizations offering harm reduction support.
