✨ How Emotional Intelligence Transforms Any Job into One You Love ✨ No matter the profession, emotional intelligence (EI) can be the key to finding joy and fulfillment in your work. I’m Jade, and I’ve experienced this firsthand. I used to work at an outdoors centre, and I absolutely loved every moment of it. There was something so fulfilling about being connected to nature, working with people, and having a sense of adventure daily. When I decided to switch careers, I struggled at first to find that same joy in my new field. What made the difference? Emotional Intelligence. By applying EI skills like self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management, I learned how to connect with my new environment and colleagues. I began to understand not only myself better but also the dynamics of my new role. With time, I was able to rekindle the passion and fulfillment I had in my previous career. NECO Alumni Spotlight: Featuring Dr. Michael Rotholz ’98 Roommates to Associates My years at NECO (then NewEnCO) in Boston kickstarted a rewarding 26-year career in eye care. After graduating in 1998, I returned to Montreal to practice with my father before moving to Toronto. There, I joined fellow NECO alumnus Dr. Barbara Caffery '77 and later worked alongside my former classmate and roommate, Dr. Howard Blackstien. In 2010, after 12 years as an associate, I opened View Eye Care in Toronto's vibrant Yorkville neighborhood. The practice has flourished, growing to a team of five ODs (including Dr. Blackstien) and 16 staff. We offer full-scope care with a focus on glaucoma and dry eye management, complemented by an optical featuring unique, independent eyewear lines. NECO continues to play a crucial role in my professional life. I regularly consult with classmates-turned-colleagues on complex cases, and we've welcomed NECO students as shadows and interns. Their enthusiasm is contagious, reminding me of the excitement I felt as a student. I'm grateful for the foundation NECO provided and the lasting connections I've made. To all fellow ODs: I hope we never lose that spark from our school days and continue to embrace both asking and answering questions throughout our careers.
