The Village of Trnavka council has approved the rezoning of land underlying the Chvaletice Manganese Project deposit. In addition, terms for a land access agreement have been approved for the Project land owned by the local Municipality of Chvaletice.

Lithium-ion battery startup Northvolt intends to purchase a former paper mill in Sweden to develop a clean source of active material and battery cells. The deal is a major development for Europe’s battery supply chain. It has the potential to accelerate and support demand for European battery raw materials, including manganese.

The gigafactory is targeted to start operations in late 2024, and its potential output is estimated at 100GWh of cathode material annually to support cell assembly at multiple Northvolt facilities. In addition, the site will use 100% clean energy from the region.  

This is another step by the company to meet its goal of manufacturing the world’s most sustainable batteries. Northvolt has already secured US$50 billion (44.6 billion euros) worth of orders from European car giants including Germany’s BMW and Volkswagen, and Sweden’s Volvo.

The sixth ministerial meeting of the European Battery Alliance was held this week in Brussels.

A key outcome connected to the meeting was the launch of the European Battery Academy, which will offer high-quality learning programs tailored specifically to the battery sector. The European Commission intends to support the academy with a grant of €10 million.

Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, who chaired the meeting, emphasized that any further advancement in the batteries sector is strongly dependent on access to critical raw materials, and priority should be placed on “ensuring that only the greenest, best performing and safest batteries make it onto the EU market.”

EU Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič has announced sweeping new initiatives to secure European sources of sustainable raw materials.

At a Feb. 1 news conference, Šefčovič underlined the urgency of the situation: “To change the game, we must all throw our weight behind efforts to secure supplies of sustainable raw materials…And we must work at full tilt.” He made three main points:

First, he urged member states to review, streamline and accelerate project permitting procedures while strengthening compliance with environmental standards laid down in EU legislation.

Second, he announced the launch of new initiatives to mobilise funding and financing, including a new public-private Sustainable Battery Materials Fund set to invest some 400 million euros in battery raw materials projects.

Third, he called for increased investment in recycling to ensure a strong supply chain for secondary raw materials.
