In the startup world, when you are fundraising, the "NO" responses come much more numerous than the "YES" responses, and to make matters worse, they come earlier. That's if you are lucky and no one is subjecting you to radio silence (a period when someone does not communicate despite having established a solid and promising communication channel).

Almost everyone is a champion at handling a "YES." We are all the worst versions of ourselves when we are rejected. When you open your inbox and see a "NO," don't hurry into making a mistake. 

Check your heart rate. Is it accelerating? Are the memories of all the hard work you put in to get this far causing distress? Do you feel heavy on your chest the task of breaking the disappointing news with your cofounders, employees, or Board of Directors?

If any of that is true, stop. Snooze the email until later. Wait to respond for one, three, or more days. Put a reminder on the calendar to respond in a week. When you're ready to respond using your heart and your brain, and not your stomach, go back to that "NO." If you see a learning opportunity, go after it politely. If not, say thanks (and mean it) and move on. 

What you are doing is special, and it is not obvious. Many people will make a mistake by turning you down. In fact, most will. That's okay. You don't need many people—just the few right ones.

Be kind and smart, always. If you can't be smart, at least be kind. The people you're speaking with may be genuinely your biggest fan club at the same time as they are saying "NO." And even if not, there are still people, even if they just made a mistake.

And remember, it's not supposed to be easy. Otherwise, it would not be special, and it would be quite obvious. Now, time to get ready for the next pitch.
