Solas Capital AG and Linklaters form a leading partnership in structuring green debt investments

🤝  We have been working together with a stellar team at Linklaters to deliver excellence in structuring green investments in Europe, successfully closing a number of transactions over the past year, with more on the horizon.

🌍 The frameworks signed to date will channel over EUR100 million into energy efficiency and behind-the-meter PV projects, delivering around 160kt of CO2e savings per year.

🏢 Collaborations include the German-based market-leading energy service companies (ESCOs) PAUL Tech AG and ENCORE Efficiency GmbH.

This week the European Investment Bank (EIB) released its report "Investment barriers in the European Union 2023", which highlighted the following key points on impact and energy investment:

🤔 Uncertainty: The dynamic economic environment and global conditions led to uncertainty, impacting investment decisions.           

🤝 Commercial PPAs are a vital tool to de-risk projects and are often central to investment decisions. Solas Capital AG are supporting companies by unravelling the complexities and minimising the counterparty risk requirements involved in PPAs. Long-term PPAs between renewable energy projects and offtakers have become an increasingly popular tool to demonstrate the “greening” of corporate power consumption.

💰 Energy Costs are a concern for 83% of EU firms. Rising energy expenses acted as a significant obstacle to investment. 

💡 Solas Capital provide finance for “Energy-as-a-Service” contracts within the EU that means there is no upfront investment costs for the energy consumer. During the contract term, the investment is repaid via a service fee. The cost savings often exceed this service fee, and the energy consumer thus realises a positive cash flow from year one.
  
🌲 Climate Change and Green Transition: While companies took steps to reduce emissions and invest in climate initiatives, they still needed support in terms of innovation and finance.  
 
⬆ Solas Capital provides reliable, scalable financing to Energy Service Companies "ESCOs". Due to their technological expertise and proximity to consumers, ESCOs are the ideal partners for energy efficiency investments. They are able to implement their project pipelines in commercial and residential buildings and in industry. Projects can be set up as project financing without recourse to the corporate customer, and can be structured off-balance sheet for both the consumer and the ESCO.

👩‍🎓 Skills Shortages: Many EU firms faced challenges due to a lack of skilled staff, affecting their investment activities. The Solas Capital team has years of experience in green infrastructure, energy efficiency and sustainability.

🌍 Despite these challenges, EU firms investing in energy efficiency jumped 11 percentage points from the 2022 survey, to 51%. Solas Capital are supporting companies to reduce and stabilise their energy costs and lower their greenhouse gas emissions. Investment is crucial for competitiveness both domestically and internationally.
