Markets Hold Steady Through Volatility The FED cut their base rate by the slightly unexpected 50 points. This caused big moves in GBP/USD and EUR/USD rates. However, what went up, came back down further....then came back up! That leaves rates similar to where they were 24 hours ago. However that's ahead of the big one at lunch time. The UK interest rate decision. Analysts believe a zero change is nailed on to stay at 5%. However most analysts believed the FED would only slice 25 points off their base rate last night. The interesting number might be the monetary policy committee vote count. There are 9 members of the committee meaning theirs always a deciding vote....although there are 3 options on the table. Rate up, rate down, or no change. Consensus suggests the members will vote 7 for unchanged and 2 for a cut. This could be the mover of the markets if it's different to this, and there's also the monetary policy committees report which analyses their decisions. With GBP/EUR rattling near highs, there could be a degree of risk coming off the table, and forward contracts being entered into. Statistically speaking it seems more likely the Pound could drop versus the Euro, but time will tell. If that wasn't enough, breakfast tomorrow sees the UKs public sector net borrowing position and retail sales numbers. Anyone trading Pounds in any direction and into any currency should be watchful in the next 24 hours. The early hours of tomorrow sees both the Peoples Bank of China and the Bank of Japan release their interest rate decisions. The Japanese Yen, in particular, will be followed intently as the move from negative -0.1% last decision date shocked the global stock markets and wiped billions off valuations in 24 hours. UK Wage Growth Slows Breakfast saw the unemployment rate and the average earnings reported in the UK. Unemployment came in at the expected 4.4%, whilst wage growth slowed to 5.7%. However this is in line with dropping inflation which is at 2%, so wage growth is now outstripping increases in prices. This was a bit of storm in a teacup for Sterling rates that showed a bit of volatility before calming down. Looking ahead the big news is the European interest rate decision where analysts are expecting a hold at 4.25%. The ECB press conference follows which could be the mover for GBP/EUR today. Going into tomorrow is eyes back on the Pound. Just after midnight there's a consumer confidence reading before the retail sales report out at breakfast. Pound Bounces On Speeches Yesterday afternoon saw the Pound leap up close to year highs again on the back of positive rhetoric from the Bank of England. Versus the Euro it looks like Sterling has joined in the winning ways. As expected the German inflation came in in line with expectations. However the UK GDP number came in at monthly growth of 0.4% versus an expected 0.2%. This could keep GBP/EUR touching those highs. However today will see the test of GBP/USD. It's all eyes on the US inflation report just after lunch. Analysts are expecting no change from last month of annualised growth of 3.4%. This will be a telling number in the central banks war on inflation. Once that report is priced in it's the turn of the second biggest economy in the early hours of Friday. Chinese import and export numbers will be reported before breakfast which is a bellwether of the global consumer demand. Eurozone Inflation Inbound - MI020724 Around mid morning the EU inflation number gets reported. Analysts expect annualised growth of 2.5% which is a slight downtick from the 2.6% reported in June. This will be a key number for today as the ECB has already made its first base rate cut whilst most other countries have held their rates. The base rate is the main lever a central bank can pull or push to control inflation. The theory being that if it costs more to borrow (higher base rate), consumers will borrow less and therefore spend less, in turn dropping inflation. The key is the balance. Some growth is healthy whereas hyper inflation on the upside and deflation on the downside are seen as unhealthy for the economy. There's a press conference with 2 big hitters later yesterday being the Chair of the FED, Jerome Powell, and the President of the ECB, Christine Lagarde. Pound Shorts Get Wiped Out - MI300524 Yesterday saw what looked to be a number of large, short positions wiped out in GBP/EUR. There was a spike in the rate that instantly settled back. This could have been caused by short positions (bets that the rate is going to drop) being closed out on automatic orders called stop losses. The rate was touching year highs again, and for the other times this happened the rate dropped back. This could have led to traders betting that the rate was going to drop again, and when it didn't their automatic orders could have triggered causing the spike. Other than that Pound rates remain quite quiet. The change could come later with the preliminary GDP numbers being released in the US. Analysts are predicting quarterly growth of 1.3% which would indicate the US economy is in good shape. Going into tomorrow things could change again with Japanese inflation and unemployment numbers out. If that wasn't enough there's German retail sales followed by the Nationwide, in the UK, releasing its change in house prices.
