Plenty® and Mawarid Holding Investment Partnership for novel farming in GCC:
- A multi-year, exclusive partnership to supply locally grown fresh produce to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
- Significant Investment: The joint venture will invest over AED 500 million (US$130 million) in its first project, an indoor vertical farm in Abu Dhabi, aimed at producing more than 2 million kilograms of strawberries annually.
- Future Expansion: The partnership plans to develop up to five farms in the next five years, requiring an investment of up to AED 2.5 billion (US$680 million) and generating numerous employment opportunities.

IN FOCUS – KUWAIT AGRICULTURE
INVESTING IN FOOD INNOVATION AMID HYPER WATER SCARCITY
 
What if #foodsecurity through traditional #agriculture is unsustainable and unattainable for a country on account of its #extreme water-resource #scarcity and environmental #constraints?

Alas, this precisely is the case for #Kuwait -- which is why it #imports over 96% of its #food (and through which it in fact achieves a high ranking on the Global Food Security Index).

In a region facing extreme water scarcity -- and with Kuwait possessing only 8.6% arable land -- the country produces only 1% of its crops using traditional open-field agriculture.

Ultimately, agriculture contributes less than 0.5% to the country’s #GDP. 

As a #hyperarid small-sized country ensconced in the #ArabianPeninsula, Kuwait is particularly vulnerable to the challenges posed by the changing climate especially on water scarcity and the vulnerability of coastal regions – with significant deleterious impacts on agriculture, #biodiversity, #energy, #health and #infrastructure.

Despite the foregoing, Kuwait – in its proactive efforts to shore up its traditionally weak agriculture industry -- has begun #investing in food #innovation, including in #indoor and #verticalfarms.

A case in point is Greenlifegcc -- allied with #Switzerland's CleanGreens Solutions SA -- whose smart indoor-agriculture operation in #Abdalli, Kuwait using #aeroponics produces high-quality fresh produce with minimal water. 

Adel Al Shamali, Chairman of Green Life GCC, underscored that their enterprise aligns well with the government’s ‘#Kuwait2035’ strategic goals of “ensuring food security for the country” and “#diversifying income sources for the future.”

Noteworthily, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry - Kuwait has instituted key measures this year to help protect the nation’s food security -- including prohibiting the #exports of egg and meat and restricting the slaughtering of female livestock. 

Several programs and organizations support agriculture in Kuwait -- including the Public Authority of Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (#PAAF), the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (#KISR), among others.
