It was great to speak to David Koo Hjalmarsson, CEO at Kind to Biome, and to learn about their work in product-microbiome testing for skin care, cosmetic and personal care brands. Everything around us affects our microbiome and it's great to see that more and more companies pay attention to how their products affect it.

Three years ago, I was at my lowest point with severe eczema. What truly changed my life (and reversed all my symptoms) was to learn about #nutrition, #guthealth and change my #lifestyle.

After I reversed my symptoms, I couldn't help but think: "Can we prevent and reverse chronic diseases?". Chronic diseases are predicted to cost society $47 trillion by 2030, according to the UN. This is possibly the boldest goal any Health Care company should have, but nearly none is working towards this. In fact, most "Health Care" companies profit out of chronic symptoms.

I spoke to dozens of scientists all around the world to understand how we got to this point: 60% of American adults and 40% of children have a chronic disease. 

The insight that blew my mind is the following: in the first years of life, our immune system, cognition and metabolism are shaped and the gut #microbiome is incredibly important. Certain gut microbiome patterns in early life are associated to all chronic diseases later in life (#asthma, #allergy, #eczema, #obesity). The gut microbiome is dynamic and we can influence it through our lifestyle choices.

Most importantly: Thousands of publications exist on lifestyle factors that could predispose to lifelong health (instead of disease), but this knowledge is not easily available to the population. I find this sick.

I started Alba Health with Prof. Willem M. De Vos to change this. We help parents discover their children's gut microbiome and established evidence on lifestyle choices that can impact their #children's health - for life. We translate established science into practical action plans, so that parents can take action when it matters most. 

We always believed this will only work if it's based on science. That's why we launched the PREVENT study in Sweden, collecting gut microbiome samples and lifestyle & health questionnaires from over 300 families longitudinally. We also have a research collaboration with one of the largest child microbiome studies in the world by the University of Helsinki.

We started Alba Health to help parents take care of their children's gut health, for the best start in life. And we are on a mission to stop chronic diseases from childhood, given the crucial role of the #gutmicrobiome in the first years of life.

One year ago, Alba Health was mainly an idea, backed by our phenomenal early supporters. It started from my experience going through and resolving my severe eczema and Prof. Willem M. De Vos' pioneering work in microbiome science with over 800 publications 🔬 

Alba Health is based on the insight that some gut microbiome profiles in the first years of life are associated to diseases like #asthma, #allergy, #eczema and #obesity later in life. We believe in a future where such patterns can be detected early and corrected, to stop the #chronicdisease epidemic 💡 

Today, we are the first and only company with access to structured longitudinal data on the child gut microbiome linked to data on lifestyle and health outcomes. We have developed a gut microbiome test for children and provide lifestyle guidance through certified Nutrition & Health Coaches to promote a healthy lifestyle 🍏 

The reason why our data is so important is that, for the first time, we have a "healthy reference". We compare your child's sample to gut microbiome profiles of children who turned out to be healthy later in life ✨ 

We have analyzed over 500 metagenomes and we receive enthusiastic messages from our users daily, getting concrete benefits from our product!
Our users have the option to opt into #research, in collaboration with 4 universities, on a quest to understand the role of the gut microbiome in chronic diseases.

Welcome to our office in Houston, Texas! 🚀 

In the upcoming months, we will be partnering closely with Texas Medical Center Innovation to explore how Alba's technology can support doctors in clinical practice. TMC, the largest hospital city in the world, left us mind-blown with its top-notch facilities, the presence of leading key opinion leaders, and the incredible speed at which innovation is fostered here.

During our visit in the States, Eleonora Cavani met with Texas Children's Hospital, one of the largest children's hospital in the United States, with nearly 4.9 million patient encounters. Their Microbiome Center is pioneering research focused on the care of women and children, with notable studies on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a painful gastrointestinal condition affecting as many as 1 in 10 people worldwide.

The TMC team has curated a phenomenal program for us, connecting us with impressive experts in our field. We are eager to explore how Alba can make a meaningful impact in supporting doctors and patients in clinical practice!

Exciting news – together with three other life science companies, Alba Health has been selected for an accelerator program in the US! 🇺🇸

On May 13, we will travel to Houston to participate in Texas Medical Center Innovation’s tailormade accelerator program. This will be followed by a six month program which will give us critical insight to create field-ready plans for bringing our product to the US market.

The initiative aims to facilitate market expansion into the US by fostering strategic partnerships, promoting clinical innovation, and cultivating research collaborations within the vibrant TMC ecosystem, the world’s largest medical complex renowned for its healthcare expertise and resources. The program is a collaboration between the BioInnovation Institute and Texas Medical Center.

A little PREVENT update: 

The study is in full speed, and hundreds of samples are now in the lab being sequenced! At Alba Health, we use deep shotgun metagenomics sequencing technology to analyze extracted DNA from the baby stool samples. This method provides comprehensive microbiome profiling and enables characterization of the microbiome composition. It is the most advanced technology used in microbiome research today, offering insights into both composition and functionality with the highest output.

One step further to mapping the connection between the gut microbiome and lifestyle, wellbeing and health during the first year of life! 🎯
