The Australian Accounting Standards Board (#AASB) has just released an exposure draft, paving the way for climate-related financial reporting standards in Australia. Here's a brief summary of the draft:

🌏 The Australian Sustainability Reporting Standards (#ASRS) are taking their initial step into the world of sustainability reporting, with a primary focus on climate-related financial disclosures.

📅 A 120-day comment period on the exposure draft is now open, running until March 1, 2024, with the standards set to be in effect from July 1, 2024.

📈 These standards will initially apply to companies that meet at least two of the following criteria: more than 500 employees, over $1 billion in assets, and revenue exceeding $500 million.

🌐 ASRS 1 and 2 are largely influenced by the International Sustainability Standards Board (#ISSB) but emphasize climate-related disclosure in alignment with government efforts to make climate reporting mandatory under new legislation.

🔍 AASB is committed to modifying ISSB standards to make them more suitable for the Australian context, focusing on climate reporting for now.

🇦🇺 These standards are set to become mandatory in July, contingent on legislation from Parliament.

📊 The exposure draft includes proposals such as requiring entities to disclose any absence of material climate-related risks and opportunities and to convert greenhouse gases into CO2 equivalent values.

🌡️ While emissions disclosure is crucial, the emphasis is on risk disclosure – understanding the threats and opportunities posed by rising temperatures.

📝 Reporting entities will undertake climate resilience assessments against various future scenarios, disclosing market-based Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.

🔄 The default methodology for reporting entities is the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGERS).

💼 A "principles-based approach" will be taken to Scope 3 emissions reporting, recognising the complexity of this new territory.

🗣️ Stakeholder input is essential, and AASB plans to engage with the community through outreach events, an online survey, and written submissions.

This exposure draft is a significant step toward creating a robust framework for climate-related financial disclosure in Australia. It's an important development for companies and investors alike, as it places greater emphasis on transparency and accountability in addressing climate risks and opportunities.

💡 Groundbreaking legislation (#SB253) was signed into law over the weekend by California governor Gavin Newsom. It require public and private companies whose annual revenues exceed $1bn to disclose their carbon emissions, including Scope 3 emissions generated by their supply chains.
