Last year, in what felt at the time like a leap of faith, I hired a woman with a nearly 20-year gap in her resume for a key position at ETHIK . She had been a stay at home mom raising 5 kids and was recently divorced. I then watched in amazement as she jumped into the role, caught up quickly on any tech or workplace stuff that had changed since she was in the field, and has just been kicking bum and taking names at her position. What I realized is that 20 years of raising humans is no gap at all, and that in fact, research shows that mothers are abnormally focused and productive employees, as well as empathetic and skilled team players. Kat's story is the inspiration behind this article my team wrote for Forbes Business Council about the power of hiring mothers. How do we shift minds, hearts, cultures, and policies to turn the "motherhood penalty" into the "motherhood advantage"? What companies are doing this well and how are they doing it??
