Metagenomi, Inc., a gene editing biotechnology company, develops therapeutics for patients using metagenomics-derived genome editing toolbox in the United States. The company's genome editing toolbox includes programmable nucleases, base editors, and RNA and DNA-mediated integration systems, such as prime editing systems and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat-associated transposases. It has a strategic collaboration and license agreement with ModernaTX, Inc. focusing on new genome editing system for in vivo human therapeutic applications; a development, option, and license agreement with Affini-T Therapeutics, Inc. to develop and commercialize gene edited T-cell receptor-based therapeutic products in the field of treatment, prevention, or diagnosis of human cancer; and a collaboration and license agreement with Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to research, develop, and commercialize investigational medicines using genome editing technologies. The company was incorporated in 2016 and is based in Emeryville, California.

During AIChE's 6th International Conference on CRISPR Technologies, which took place October 17-19th in Boston, MA, Metagenomi gave one oral presentation and two poster presentations.  What scientific findings did we present at this conference?

Last year, we published new data in Nature Portfolio describing novel, compact RNA-guided nucleases used to develop the smallest adenine base editor (ABE) to date. This ABE, at just 623 amino acids in size, is highly active in cells.

Today’s historic FDA approval of the first CRISPR-based therapy is a remarkable step forward for both sickle cell patients and the field of gene editing. At Metagenomi, our ultra-small nucle­as­es are high­ly effi­cient genome edit­ing sys­tems that have the poten­tial for exten­sive ther­a­peu­tic appli­ca­tions. We have pri­or­i­tized find­ing sys­tems to over­come the size con­straints of first gen­er­a­tion nucle­as­es. Our sys­tems are a frac­tion of the size and pack­age eas­i­ly into a sin­gle AAV for tar­get­ing organs beyond what is pos­si­ble with lipid nanopar­ti­cle delivery.

Today, the UK officially authorized the very first CRISPR-based gene editing therapy for use. This is a momentous day for our field and a huge step forward in paving the way for curative genetic medicines to become standardized treatments. Of course, this is an exciting day for the field, but moreover, its an astounding win for patients and families.

Today, Metagenomi announced the appointment of Luis Borges, Ph.D., as Chief Scientific Officer and Pamela Wapnick, MBA, as Chief Financial Officer.
