This research paper explores the intriguing link between human curiosity and video game engagement. 

Using the Five-Dimensional Curiosity Scale, the study surveyed 113 participants to identify game genres that trigger curiosity. Notably, exploration and social simulation games emerged as strong contenders.

Will the games market grow in 2023?

The global gaming industry is set to continue its growth trajectory in 2023, with an anticipated revenue of nearly $188 billion, up 2.6% from the previous year. 

Console sales are expected to be the primary driver of revenue growth, rebounding from underperformance in 2022 due to pandemic-related delays. 

The industry is also witnessing increased engagement among younger generations, while "transmedia releases" like movies and TV shows based on games are helping legitimize the industry for non-gamers. 

This report highlights the dominance of the Asia-Pacific region in global gaming, driven by markets in India, China, Japan, and South Korea. At the same time, North America and Europe are projected to account for a significant revenue share. 

Overall, the gaming landscape is evolving and expanding, with the market projected to generate a yearly revenue of $212.4 billion in 2026.

Can games improve mental health?

A recent study conducted in collaboration with Electronic Arts and Nintendo of America challenges concerns that excessive video game play can lead to addiction and poor mental health. 

The study surveyed players of Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and Animal Crossing: New Horizons and analyzed their actual play behavior with the telemetry data provided by the game companies. 

Contrary to general belief, the study found a positive relationship between gameplay and mental well-being.

This research highlights the importance of collaborations between industry partners and scientists to provide reliable evidence on the impact of video games on mental health. 

As research in this area continues to expand, policymakers will soon start seriously considering games as a way for people to improve their well-being.

How is Finland becoming a hub for gaming?

In recent years, the Finnish games industry has experienced significant growth, diversification, and internationalization. This rapid expansion can be attributed to the rising popularity of PC and console platforms, an increasingly collaborative industry culture, and a focus on sustainability. 

Finland is known for embracing diversity and promoting gender equality in the industry, with initiatives and organizations supporting underrepresented groups. This focus has inspired many indie game devs to follow their passions and start development companies. 

The industry has seen a 16% increase in active developer studios and a 200% increase in developer studio investments post-pandemic. Additionally, an estimated 500-1300 new studio positions will be open to Finlands growing population of bright game developers over the next two years.
