PHYSICS-AWARE ARCHITECTURES: The diagram represents traditional computation. We insert energy and inputs into a mathematical operation and "hope" for a result. Needless to say, we create heat as a byproduct, no matter what traditional computation we attempt. The faster we want a result, the more heat is produced. So, what do we do with the excess heat? 

We can consider harvesting (converting heat back into energy) or cooling the hardware to avoid meltdowns/instabilities—neither is attractive.

Today, a staggering 40% of a data center's energy budget is dedicated to cooling. For every ten units of energy, only six units do actual computation—irreversible computing wastes 2/5 of the total energy budget. Looking at recent announcements, we see this quickly approaching 3/5. Sure, we can move the data centers to the Antarctic and hope for Fusion power, but it still doesn't solve the problem of today's inefficient computation.

Estimates show that Data Centers may consume up to 4.3 Trillion Cubic Meters of water (52% of which is potable) per year for cooling; to put this into perspective, the world's population consumes ~4 Trillion Cubic Meters. 

The good news about modern workloads, such as AI, is that they appear to be "embarrassingly structured" and "embarrassingly parallel"; there is less of the "embarrassingly unhelpful" data that modern CPUs tend to deal with. Unhelpful remains predominantly devices at the edge, i.e., the interactive systems. 

We know a better solution, as we stress the global energy production with inefficient irreversible computation (as in the old Coal Powered Computation of the digital era). The solution is to combine information and energy into a single-density flow equation. Doing nothing is the Ostrich method. We appear unwilling to leap. Each of us, in our capacity, can contribute to this shift by advocating for and adopting Physics-Aware Architectures. I do not see any way around this problem without bringing Physics into the foreground —designs that understand the thermodynamics and the energy+information movement within a circuit.
