🎙️ In a recent interview with Jason Calacanis, David Clark (CIO at Vencap) debunked the narrative that “large VC funds” can’t generate meaningful returns! 

💸 Vencap combed through 36 years of data on the VC funds they’ve backed…

…and identified 50 (!) companies that had returned over $1 BILLION in profits back to a specific fund that backed them! 

📊 The table shows 15 companies that were named by Clark in the interview…

🕵🏻‍♂️I dug into which VCs were invested at the earliest stages into these gargantuan outcomes. 

🔍 Spoiler Alert: It’s not a surprise. 

🎯The usual suspects -- Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z), Index Ventures, Accel, First Round, USV, ICONIQ, Sequoia & LocalGlobe all feature!

🚀 Note that Peter Thiel & Marc Andreessen were very successful angels before starting Founders Fund & A16Z. 

🔥Andreessen invested in the seed round of Slack & Twitter & Thiel invested in the seed of Facebook & Stripe. 

🤯Elon Musk was also an angel in the seed round of $65bn fintech behemoth Stripe.

💰It’s worth noting that given the outsized outcomes, the later stage (B,C,D+) investors are also very IN THE MONEY!

📈 Another eye-catching bit of data on the influence individual companies can have on fund returns came from Atul Rustgi of Fund of Funds Accolade Partners 👇

🎙️On a recent 10X Capital podcast with David Weisburd, he cited that:

➜ In Accolade Fund I: 10 out of ~ 500 underlying companies returned the whole fund! 

➜ In Accolade Fund III: 10 out of ~500 underlying companies returned 3x the whole fund!

🤯Just 2% of companies returned 1-3x of capital invested. 

🕵🏻‍♂️This *extreme* power law dynamic is most pronounced in VC, and is why diversifying (be it at fund or company level is important).

➜ The extreme power law that exists across companies, funds, general partners & fund returns! 

➜ The persistence that exists across funds who are lucky enough to have an early blockbuster (the likelihood of another is markedly higher than the mean)
