When I was playing Babe Ruth baseball as a young teen, I was on a hitting streak. It coincided with riding my bike, hat on backwards, the wrong way on the highway to the ballpark. I was convinced that if I took a different route to the games, I would suddenly slump. The season ended before my hot streak did, so to this day, I do not know whether my results were due to some fortunate bat on ball skills or the process of taking my life into my own hands on the highway.

One of the challenges with managing your investments is not dissimilar from managing a hitting streak: How do you determine whether your process led to good results or the results came in spite of a questionable process? Or worse, did you have a good process with bad results or a bad process with good results?

We are excited to announce that Accredited Investors Wealth Management® has again been named one of the Top 200 Workplaces in Minnesota by the Star Tribune. This marks our third consecutive year on this list. 

A complete list of those selected is available at the Star Tribune online and was published in the Star Tribune Top Workplaces special section on Sunday, June 18. 

Produced by the same team that compiles the 32-year-old Star Tribune 100 report of the best-performing public companies in Minnesota, Top Workplaces recognizes the most progressive companies in Minnesota based on employee opinions measuring engagement, organizational health and satisfaction. The analysis included responses from 124,719 employees at Minnesota public, private, and nonprofit organizations. 

The rankings in the Star Tribune Top 200 Workplaces are based on survey information collected by Energage, an independent company specializing in employee engagement and retention. 

Accredited Investors Wealth Management® was ranked # 32 in the category consisting of companies with 50 – 150 employees. 

Star Tribune CEO and Publisher Steve Grove said, “The companies in the Star Tribune Top 200 Workplaces deserve high praise for creating the very best work environments in the state of Minnesota. My congratulations to each of these exceptional companies.” 
  
To qualify for the Star Tribune Top Workplaces, a company must have more than 50 employees in Minnesota. Over 5,000 companies were invited to participate. Rankings were composite scores calculated purely on the basis of employee responses. The rankings are conducted annually, and this year’s surveys were completed in early March. No fee was charged to participate in the survey process or the rankings.

When Silicon Valley Bank in part blew up because the bank mismatched what it was buying (longer-term bonds) with what it was covering (short-term deposits), it made me think about how sometimes we often don’t pay appropriate attention to time horizons.
 
We focus on the things in front of us, even if we can’t do much about them and they may not have long-term meaningful impact. What should investors have done about the debt ceiling? Unless you are a day trader, the most likely answer is if your savings and investments are matched appropriately with your time horizon, then nothing. Why? Because even though the potential government default was consistently the news of the day, there was not much to do about it. You would have had to make two correct calls: to sell out before things were settled and to buy back once a resolution was reached.
 
So here is a tool to help you think about your financial decisions: Will this matter in five days, five months, five years?

I love the few weeks during spring migration when the warblers pass through Minnesota. The sparse leaves on the trees and the birds’ vivid colors make the birds easy to see, although their rapid movements make them hard to identify.

We know that for many species, their time here is limited, so we adjust our calendars to add walks and weekend day trips.

Is it because this is a very concrete period — usually late April to late May — that makes it easier to set aside time?

I ask because so many other aspects of our lives are transitory, yet we may keep ignoring them as if they weren’t. While it is important to enjoy what you have, it is equally important to identify and acknowledge that you won’t have it forever.

I am not a big believer in legacy because how you are remembered is generally more about the person remembering than the person being remembered. But I am a huge fan of sharing what has been important in our lives with our families. In Rabbi Steven Leder’s book, For You When I Am Gone, he shares a step-by-step process of writing an ethical will. Ethical wills share your values rather than your valuables.

One of the questions he asks is “What will your epitaph say? A headstone has room for fifteen characters per line and four lines total.” We can’t condense our lives entire lives into sixty characters, but what are words that you would want to describe yourself?
