Congratulations to our senior researcher Mikhail Elyashberg and his co-authors for reaching the milestone of 2000 views of their paper on the #structural reassignment of polyenol natural products. Published in 2023 in the European Journal of Organic Chemistry, the paper examines how two unusual polyenols categorized as defying chemical principles were subsequently reassigned as the well-known nucleosides, adenosine and uridine, following reanalysis of the original data. By applying chemical intuition, computer-assisted structure elucidation (CASE), using the ACD/Labs’ Structure Elucidator Suite, and DFT methods, the team was able to unravel the complexity of determining the chemical identity of natural products, where the extensive demands on interpreting spectroscopic information can often lead to misassignment. CASE can help in combating potential errors caused by subjective interpretation using classical elucidation methods.
