Jeremy Hunt’s recent speech on boosting growth in the economy included a promise to spread prosperity across the UK, with the chancellor claiming GDP would be boosted by nearly 5% through the creation of regional economic powerhouses outside London. Manchester tech startups raised £524m in 2022, the highest of any UK city outside of London, even outperforming international tech hubs like Lisbon, Brussels, and Rome. Despite the wider tech and economic downturn, Manchester-based tech companies have continued to raise funding in 2023 and there are an estimated to be more than 1,600 startups and scale-ups in the city,  employing approximately 60,000 people. 

The North West is home to a vibrant startup community and many exciting companies - including some of our portfolio companies, Vypr, Cavalry and Nivo. 

This is a significant step into promoting regional tech investment, innovation and development.

Once again, Atomico has released the annual 'State of European Tech report'.

Some of our key takeaways from the report:
- European tech lost $400bn in value. The macroeconomic outlook is the biggest reason for the drop, closely followed by an unfriendly regulatory environment.
- Fundraising conditions will get tougher. Startups are on track to raise $85bn this year, down from $100bn in 2021. But it’s not all doom and gloom! There is $44bn dry powder ready to be invested in excellent founding teams with bold ideas.

The race to super-app status has begun. Apps that can address all of a customer’s needs all in one place - from financial services, to shopping, to social media. While this sounds great - the question is whether customers, who are accustomed to choice and separation, are really ready to make this shift. 

Revolut’s recent installation of a ‘chat’ feature and creation of ‘Revolut Homes’ places itself one step closer to becoming a global financial superapp.  

ACF Investor’s Managing Partner Timothy Mills argues that unless you are able to capture most of the incumbent services people already use, the value of a super-app becomes diluted - acting like a “shopping mall which lacks your favourite stores”.
