The United Nations ’ annual climate change conference COP29 Azerbaijan gets underway in Baku next week with the slogan ‘In solidarity for a green world’ that reflects the spirit of its mission. The urgent need for a green and circular economy could not be more pronounced. In Episode 6 of AESG ’s #FutureFocus series our Senior Sustainability Associate – Sarah Jaber highlights the value of the circular economy in it’s ability to not just conserve natural resources but also drive economic value resulting in reduced cost as well as newly created business opportunities. Construction and demolition waste constitutes around 70% of the total solid waste generated in the UAE. Not only is this a financial and environmental burden from a waste management perspective, it also means that all resources and the capital being put into buildings is ending up in landfill. A common misconception is to look at recycling as the only solution. While this might slow down the supply chain loop, it doesn’t fully close it. So, how can we truly implement circular economy strategies in the built environment? What if we could reuse or refurbish existing buildings instead? Can innovative solutions like modular construction, reversible bonding, lifecycle assessments, and building passports transform the way we think about buildings? WELL Certification has seen rapid growth, with more than 70,000 locations now enrolled in the program, including 25% of the Fortune 500 who use WELL as a benchmark for health and wellbeing in their spaces. Our Director of Sustainability, Devan Valenti , recently participated in the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) 's WELL Knowledge Series Roadshow, partnering with Millikin for events across New Zealand. The roadshow made stops in Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington, where lively and insightful discussions took place. The sessions focused on the growing significance of the WELL Building Standard, highlighting how both tenants and landlords are using WELL to attract and retain talent, increase rental yields, improve ESG reporting, and secure sustainable financing. Devan shared his expertise on the connection between human health, social sustainability, and the growing emphasis on ESG performance. In a previous role as ESG Lead for Asia Pacific at the International WELL Building Institute, Devan supported organisations like Standard Chartered Bank, Unilever , and Lendlease in enhancing their ESG strategies through the implementation of WELL.
