Agreena is a technology company that specializes in developing innovative solutions to transform traditional agriculture into regenerative practices. Their platform connects farmers with the resources and tools needed to implement regenerative farming techniques, which can lead to healthier soils, increased biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.

Agreena was founded by visionary farmers and fintech-savvies in 2018. What originated as an online commodity trading marketplace has since become one of the first soil carbon certification programmes in the pan-European landscape. Using a set of core practices, Agreena's platform supports farmers in their transition to regenerative agriculture with the issuance of third-party verified carbon certificates - which can be kept by the farmer or sold onto the voluntary carbon market (VCM) for offset purposes. Accredited to ISO 14064-2 standard, the AgreenaCarbon programme is based on a yearly harvest cycle, with the data capture process giving farmers the opportunity for payouts each year.

✅ Great to see the US government engage in the need for high-integrity carbon credits with the launch of its own federal guidelines for a high-integrity voluntary carbon market (VCM).

💡Consensus on the challenge – there was broad agreement that climate change poses huge challenges to the agricultural sector and a strong commitment to delivering sustainable production and decarbonising value chains.

💡Varied approaches – there are a wide variety of actions and approaches; some efforts may not always yield the expected outcomes, but provide opportunities for further engagement and improvement.

💡Partnerships and engagements – there’s a strong desire to develop deep partnerships and engagement with local NGOs and other stakeholders, with an understanding that, while projects must have defined endpoints, ongoing programmes are essential.

💡Predictability and Scope 3 reporting – companies are prioritising predictability in client actions and emphasise the need for long-term engagement in Scope 3 reporting. Science-based solutions are favoured with an emphasis on the importance of primary data over secondary data for demonstrating progress in GHG emissions reductions quantification. The ‘supply shed’ concept is highlighted as vital for generating primary data.

💡Greenwashing concerns – companies remain cautious about greenwashing accusations, with considerable uncertainty regarding recent EU policies on green claims and corporate reporting.

💡GHG inventory transparency – this is highly valued and the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) approach, in particular, is preferred for Scope 3 reporting. However, companies struggle with varied interpretations of global standards and guidelines for quantifying GHG emissions from value chains.

💡Solutions are out there – sustainable solutions and services for carbon footprint calculations and soil carbon quantification methodologies are available now, including Agreena’s supply chain solutions, which can provide companies with the robust, field-level, verified data they need to drive decarbonisation in their supply chains.
