Meta AI Research quotes our AI research paper!

As many of you know, we are lucky to have our AI R&D center based in Warsaw, Poland—the rising star location of the global AI Computer Vision arena (for those who don’t know, you may want to check the solid Polish connection of OpenAI).

At the latest renowned #warsaw.ai society meeting, proudly our Jakub Fajkowski and Dominik Filipiak (AI Clearing alums) presented Polite Teacher (https://lnkd.in/d6J3-nUX), developed in partnership with the University of Warsaw (Andrzej Zapała, Piotr Tempczyk, Marek Cygan) and the Universität Innsbruck (Anna Fensel). The research paper has been accepted for publication at IEEE Access.

Polite Teacher is a simple yet effective method for semi-supervised instance segmentation. The proposed architecture relies on the Teacher-Student mutual learning framework. We use confidence thresholding for bounding boxes and mask scoring for masks to filter out noisy pseudo-labels.

We could say that this story ends here… But recently, the Meta AI Research & Inria teams, Tariq Berrada, Camille Couprie, Karteek Alahari, and Jakob Verbeek, cited our work as state-of-the-art in Guided Distillation (https://lnkd.in/dWAk8CTr). They improved the distillation approach by introducing a novel "guided burn-in" stage and evaluated different instance segmentation architectures, backbone networks, and pre-training strategies. Their paper was presented in January 2024 at the IEEE/CVF Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV) on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV).

The solar industry, in particular, has outshone its counterparts, setting new benchmarks for both large-scale and rooftop installations despite the challenges posed by higher costs and supply chain uncertainties. This unprecedented growth, catalyzed by supportive federal policies under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), highlights the transformative power of strategic investment and policy framework in steering the nation towards a greener future. The solar market’s resilience, significantly bolstered by a waiver on tariffs for modules imported from Southeast Asia, exemplifies the sector's capability to navigate regulatory landscapes and emerge stronger.

The US infusion of $303.3 billion in energy transition financing, directed toward clean energy technologies, including solar, signifies a pivotal shift towards sustainable development. However, a critical challenge facing the solar industry and the broader construction sector is the acute labor shortage. The Associated Builders and Contractors reports that the construction industry will require an additional 546,000 workers in 2023 alone to meet labor demand. This shortage presents a tangible hurdle to realizing the full potential of solar expansion. It underscores the need for innovative digital tools to attract and train a new generation of skilled workers. 

Artificial Intelligence emerges as a potent tool in addressing some of these challenges, offering opportunities to enhance efficiency, optimize project management, and streamline operations across the solar value chain. AI's ability to predict solar output, monitor system performance, and manage energy distribution presents a pathway to not only overcoming logistical hurdles but also significantly reducing operational costs and improving the reliability of solar energy. A prime example of AI implementation is PCL Construction, which has successfully deployed AI for years (naturally from AI Clearing).
