Zero-Click Flaw Puts Millions of Synology Storage Devices at Risk According to a recent post on WIRED , researchers have uncovered a critical vulnerability in a popular photo app pre-installed on Synology network-attached storage (NAS) devices, potentially exposing millions of users to remote attacks. The zero-click flaw, discovered as part of a hacking contest, lies within Synology's SynologyPhotos application. Attackers could exploit this vulnerability to gain root access to affected NAS devices without any user interaction. This would allow them to steal data, plant backdoors, or encrypt files with ransomware. Synology NAS systems are high-value targets, as they often store large volumes of personal and corporate data. Researchers scanned the internet and identified hundreds of thousands of vulnerable, internet-connected Synology devices, though they believe millions more could be at risk. The vulnerable devices included those used by law enforcement, law firms, and industrial/infrastructure companies. Attackers could potentially access sensitive documents, engineering files, and case materials stored on these NAS systems. Massive Shopping Scam Dupes Consumers of Millions: How Fake Online Stores are Rising and Evolving! According to The Record, Cybercriminals have exploited thousands of legitimate shopping websites to scam consumers out of “tens of millions of dollars” by redirecting them to fake online stores, cybersecurity researchers report. The scheme, called “Phish ‘n’ Ships,” used malicious code to create and promote fake product listings that ranked high in search engine results. When consumers clicked these links, they were taken to fraudulent websites where payment processors collected their credit card information, but the purchased items were never delivered. The scam, active since at least 2019, was primarily run by actors using Simplified Chinese, and targeted consumers looking for rare items, such as nostalgic products from the 1980s. Phish ‘n’ Ships involved more than 1,000 hacked sites and 121 fake online stores, deceiving hundreds of thousands of consumers. Cybersecurity firm HUMAN’s Satori Threat Intelligence was able to disrupt the operation by alerting payment processors and law enforcement. However, despite these actions, the fraudsters continue to adapt, making the scam an ongoing threat.
