Meet Emmanuel Kamuhire ! Emmanuel is an African Impact Challenge 2023 winner. Currently, he and his cohort are in Toronto as part of the AIC experience. Emmanuel is from Uganda and is the CEO and Founder of A-Lite Uganda alongside Dr. Mubiru Julius , Ms. LYDIA ASIIMWE , Mr. solomon oshabaheebwa , Dr. Brian Ssenkumba , and Mr. PAUL GUSIMBA . But that’s not all! A fact about Emmanuel is he enjoys volleyball and has been playing for over 15 years. Funny enough, when Emmanuel was in school, after seeing a gynecologist being interviewed at a radio station, he dreamed of becoming a gynecologist despite not knowing what gynecologists did. The gynecologist being interviewed seemed knowledgeable and smart, like what Emmanuel hoped to become. And while Emmanuel did not actually pursue gynecology after finding out what they did, he did pursue university studies in computer engineering. During his undergrad, the university he attended was connected to a hospital. Whenever he walked through the hospital, he would see many sick patients, and he would think to himself, “how can I integrate my knowledge in computer engineering to help some of these people in the hospital?”. One day during Emmanuel’s internship at CAMTech Uganda, a medical innovation hub located at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, his team visited a children’s hospital. It was there he saw a doctor trying to inject an IV into a baby’s arm, trying and trying, but still being unsuccessful in finding the vein. The crying baby, distressed mother, and stressed medical team’s expressions were worrisome. So much so that when they returned to the office, they started thinking about what they could do to help because this should not be the status quo for medical services. Unsure of the solution, they began Googling how this situation would be handled in a Western country like Canada or the UK. They quickly found that in these countries, they had advanced technologies and specialized devices which easily prevented these situations and made processes more efficient. At that moment they thought, “Why not Uganda?” Why couldn’t Uganda also have access to this technology? Thus, inspiring the founding of A-Lite Uganda – a MedTech company specializing in the development of medical devices. While in Canada, Emmanuel hopes to broaden his network by connecting with individuals in the MedTech space. He hopes to learn about MedTech or international business strategies from experienced mentors or investors to hopefully one day bring A-Lite Uganda’s technological innovations to the world... because they are not solving Ugandan problems, but global challenges.
