We're so thankful for the time we spent as a firm at Alpine Investors' Annual Retreat last week in Scottsdale, Arizona! Each year for our retreat, the Alpine team gathers in person to work on the business, rather than in the business.
 
In addition to catching up with colleagues and hearing from Alpine's leaders, we broke into small groups to share bright spot learnings across our portfolio companies and industries. Each of Alpine's departments also had time to think big and strategize for the future, inspired by keynote speeches from CEO and Founder Graham Weaver and President and Partner Mark Strauch, where they shared insights on what they've learned from seeing Alpine grow over 20+ years. And of course, in Alpine fashion, we celebrated with a "denim, diamonds and dancing boots" costume theme for our closing dinner and award ceremony among Scottsdale's red rocks.

In a series for Women’s History Month, Sydney Hockett was featured by CRN as it profiles women about how they came up in the IT industry, lessons learned and what they want to pass on to others in the field. Hockett is vice president at Alpine Investors-backed Evergreen, a platform for managed IT companies, government service providers and application management companies. 

When asked what advice she would give to young women coming up in tech, private equity or finance, she advises women to follow their gut.
 
“I think the best thing you can do is learn to navigate the situations you're in and to write your own story,” Hockett shares. “Not everybody is going to come around to women being leaders in these spaces but you can learn to work with those people, and you’ll get a lot farther versus finding yourself in adversarial situations. It's kind of a roundabout way of saying I think the most successful women have found a really amazing balance of being true to themselves, being strong forces in their field, but at the same time having the ability to work with all different shapes and sizes of people that come along with that and situations they find themselves in.”

In speaking with Wharton Fintech podcast hosts Wesley Aster and Djavaneh Bierwirth, Alpine Investors Founder and CEO Graham Weaver shares his experience founding the firm and gives his insights on personal growth, investing and hiring. 

In shaping the firm’s culture, for example, Weaver explains that it starts with each individual hired, no matter if there’s just a few employees with the company or hundreds—and leaders should look at the bright side of what a new hire can bring.
 
“When we had seven people at Alpine, I remember saying to myself, we can't hire anyone else because it'll ruin our culture,” Weaver says, in reflecting on a limiting belief he held. “And then we hired someone fantastic, and they made our culture better-- and we hired another person, and they made our culture better. That's our bar for each person we hire—theoretically, [they’re] making our culture better and better.”

This holistic advisory experience proved valuable for Horrocks, a full-service civil engineering firm that’s been an integral part of improving infrastructure for communities in the western United States since 1968, as it went through a 2023 acquisition by Trilon, a platform for infrastructure consulting businesses. Trilon’s mission is to design smarter infrastructure solutions that support stronger communities by backing top firms across the U.S. 

Trilon is home to more than 4,000 expert staff who work with government agencies to plan, repair and expand existing infrastructure while also developing modern solutions to age-old problems including water safety, transportation access and resilience to natural disasters.

The hospitality sector is full of strategic insights that can apply to any business, regardless of industry. That’s according to Actabl CEO Steven Moore, who recently shared his insights in an authored article for Forbes. In sharing his strategies, Moore’s first suggestion is to remember that people power your business.
 
“It’s nearly impossible to overstate the importance of great people,” Moore writes. “Your team is responsible for creating your products, delivering them to customers and providing ongoing support. The relationships that you build, internally and externally, matter. Excellence in execution is certainly important, but how you get there can determine if that excellence is sustainable. For example, we spend a lot of time considering how we can make sure people are better off for having worked with us.”
