💡 Let's talk about the fascinating world of blending octanes in gasoline. Finding the perfect combination of components can really make a difference in optimizing results. When it comes to blending, paraffin-rich components tend to play well together, while heavy aromatics don't quite mix as smoothly. 🧪 But here's the kicker – there's a difference between the tested octane result on paper and how the product actually behaves when blended with other components. For instance, sub-octane products like Raffinate and Naphtha can have a blend value up to 7 numbers higher than their paper/tested value, especially when combined with positive components like Alkylate and even more so when mixed with Oxygenates such as Ethanol and MTBE. What does this mean? This means that a carefully optimized blend can outperform the expected octane rating by half a point or more, which opens up some really exciting opportunities. ✋ However, there's a catch. Beware of reaching a point of diminishing returns. While a blend using 15% Raffinate can give you a great boost, adding more Raffinate beyond that won't have the same impact. On the other hand, Alkylate performs like a “champ,” even in blends with over 60% of its composition. 👉 AmSpec Group is excited to announce the start-up of Hard Plastic Testing (HPT) for characterization and evaluation of contaminants at the Houston Technical Center (HTC). This initiative has been driven by the industry and its need for knowledge of the feedstocks for co-processing hard plastic and pyrolyzing plastics to make Waste Plastic Process Oil (WPPO). This decision by AmSpec management augments our investments to lead the WPPO sector. It confirms leadership in analytical testing for advanced renewables and plastic feedstocks that produce waste process pyrolysis oil. ♻️ Through alliances with technology companies and with support from research scientists, Amspec is validating the techniques to define trace contaminants in municipal solid waste (MSW) plastics and is working with standards writing organizations to develop methods for this emerging sector. Engineers need to know the contaminants in the waste plastic feedstocks to monitor and control their effects on catalyst and process metallurgy. Similarly, the trading houses that will supply waste plastic need to know the contaminants for their clients and to assist in pricing this commodity. 👉 AmSpec’s EMEA Metals & Minerals team recently attended the 5th Mining and Minerals Hall (MMH) in Seville. We showcased our latest investment in our Lisbon Metals & Minerals laboratory during this event. 🔬 We have now installed a new metal analysis method using optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) alongside our existing X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method.
