We kicked off 2024 with a bang by adding a new exciting manager to the AQVC portfolio - welcome Zoe Weinberg and ex/ante!

ex/ante I is a $35M US-focused 🇺🇸 emerging manager investing in "agentic tech" that relates to human agency and rights in the digital age, spanning #privacy, #data, #security, #crypto, #web3, and #digitalidentity. This one-of-its-kind fund is well-positioned to tackle daunting global issues, from internet-based threats to democracy to intellectual property. 

At a time when the World Economic Forum identifies "AI-generated misinformation and disinformation", "cyberattacks", and "societal or political polarization" among the top five risks likely to cause a global crisis in 2024, investing in technologies that prevent and counteract these risks is more crucial than ever.

Zoe Weinberg began her professional career at Goldman Sachs and, during her tenure at the IFC - International Finance Corporation’s The World Bank Group, gained insights into how technology can bring out the best and worst of society. Her work took her to Kenya with stops in Somalia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Later in her career, she gained valuable political experience and served on the Congressional National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence in Washington. 

Zoe started building ex/ante in 2020 under Eric Schmidt and Wendy Schmidt’s public benefit venture facility, Schmidt Futures, before spinning it out in 2022. Schmidt continues to be an LP in the fund.

She was joined by Michael Mosier in early 2023, who is also a Partner in the fund. Michael, previously the top lawyer at crypto startups Espresso Systems and Chainalysis, has held leadership roles at the U.S. Treasury and the Department of Justice.

Ex/ante will be investing $500,000 to $1 million checks in pre-seed and seed rounds, and has started to build the portfolio with companies including deep-fake detection startup Reality Defender, consumer identity company lockr, and self-custody business Webacy, among others.

Other LPs include Cendana Capital, Marc Andreessen, Brad Burnham, the Ford Foundation, and Union Square Ventures, just to mention a few.

🇺🇸 Alt Capital I: $150M
Jack Altman, co-founder and chairman of the people management platform Lattice, and brother of OpenAI leader Sam Altman, has launched a $150 million venture capital fund under his new VC firm, Alt Capital. The fund will specifically target early-stage founders and startups addressing "hard problems" at the forefront of technology and complexity. In a LinkedIn post, Altman stressed the importance of investors offering quality advice and leveraging their networks to assist companies in acquiring customers, capital, and talent. Alt Capital is committed to being readily available for portfolio companies when assistance is needed, respecting their space when not.

🇺🇸 Overture I: $60M
Climate-focused venture capital firm Overture has successfully closed a $60 million debut fund aimed at investing in promising climate startups. The firm's goal is to assist these startups in leveraging U.S. government support for expedited scaling. Overture provides distinctive in-kind support through climate government affairs firm Boundary Stone Partners to aid portfolio companies in effective government engagement. The team, around Shomik Dutta combines experience from senior roles in the U.S. Department of Energy and the White House, successful startup ventures, and previous investments in climate startups. The fund focuses on hardware and software technologies across various sectors, excluding "gov tech" startups dependent solely on government customers. Overture is dedicated to supporting startups offering solutions that are cheaper, better, and faster than carbon-intensive alternatives.

🇺🇸 AIX Ventures II: $202M
San Francisco-based venture capital firm AIX Ventures, led by AI experts Richard Socher and Shaun Johnson, has successfully closed its second fund, raising $202 million. AIX Ventures is devoted to investing in early-stage AI companies, with a focus on human-centered solutions driving collaboration, productivity, and innovation across various industries. Founded by renowned AI practitioners, the firm aims to support entrepreneurs utilizing AI to transform the future of work, particularly those shaping the coexistence of humans and machines. The new fund enables AIX Ventures to lead more investment rounds, expand its team, and contribute to creating a world where humans and machines collaborate for positive change. The firm envisions AI as a force for good, working towards a future of equitable and sustainable development.
