This year Aspen participated in the Life Science Cares San Diego backpack drive to help ensure local underserved students start the year with all the school supplies they need for the upcoming school year.

We started with the goal of assembling 50 backpacks for our community. Our team far surpassed that goal with a total of 200 backpacks donated to Home Start Inc.! Thank you to our awesome team for donating supplies and helping us assemble these backpacks, which will allow all students in San Diego to succeed in school.

Also, a huge thank you to our rockstar team member Nayema Urdiales for organizing this drive!

We are thrilled to learn that Home Start Inc. has received 1,500 backpacks and school supplies to be donated to San Diego County students, beating their 1,200 backpack goal! We are delighted to have supported this effort!

The Journal of Neurosurgery has published online a study 
(https://lnkd.in/eNAiayGM) by Dr. Marina Emborg's lab at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison regarding the novel cell transplantation approach being used for the delivery of ANPD001, an autologous, dopaminergic neuronal cell replacement we are investigating as a potential treatment for Parkinson’s Disease. 
 
The study published today was also incorporated into Aspen’s Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), enabling the company to proceed with the current Phase 1/2a first-in-human clinical trial of ANPD001. 
 
“By the time of diagnosis, it is common for people with Parkinson’s to have lost the majority of dopaminergic neurons, leading to progressive loss of motor and neurological function,” explained Ed Wirth, MD, PhD, study co-author and Aspen’s chief medical officer. “To replace these lost cells, we must target a very specific area of the brain with a high degree of surgical precision. Using the latest advances in intraoperative MRI guided techniques, the patient’s new cells are transplanted, a few microliters at a time, to the exact area where they are most needed.”

We are pleased to share that Aspen Neuroscience is utilizing the MRI-Guided ClearPoint Neuro, Inc., Navigation System for all patients enrolled in the recently launched ASPIRO Phase 1/2a clinical trial for transplantation of dopaminergic neuron precursor cells (DANPCs) in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD). 
 
The ClearPoint System utilizes intraprocedural MR images to provide real-time navigational instruction for the neurosurgeon, and confirmation that the desired anatomical target has been reached with submillimetric accuracy. Combined with The SmartFlow® Cannula, which is less than 2 millimeters in diameter, this allows minimally-invasive delivery of therapeutic agents in a patient's brain.

Yesterday, Aspen had four teams play in the Parkinson's Association of San Diego's annual golf tournament. Thank you to the Parkinson's Association for hosting, we can't wait to join again next year!

Today our Executive Director of Facilities and Engineering, Jeff Barbee, will be participating in the the CRB Life Sciences Symposium during the BIO International Convention with a terrific panel of experts. 

The panel will discuss navigating and leveraging recent changes in the life sciences industry, with an emphasis on conversations around macroeconomic conditions, ecosystem evolution, technological advancements, and equality & sustainability.

Our CSO Xiaokui Zhang, PhD chaired the "Characterization of iPSC-derived Cell Therapies – Going in Depth" session with Director of Analytical Development, Daniel Fremgen, presenting "Characterization of Autologous iPSCs and Dopaminergic Neuron Precursor Cells for Parkinson’s Disease."
