Balloon endoscopy is the standard of care in the drive to diagnose and treat small bowel disease as it allows for visualization of the entire small intestine. It is interventional and less invasive than traditional open surgery.

Current balloon endoscopy technology is technically challenging and time-consuming. The pressure limitations necessary to prevent mucosal damage reduces anchoring force of the balloon. 

The Ancora-SB balloon overtube solution is designed to maximize frictional properties, improving mucosal wall traction and anchoring consistency in the gastrointestinal tract.

Aspero Medical is pleased to announce that it has received clearance from the FDA to market and sell the Ancora-SB small bowel balloon overtube that incorporates the company’s patented Pillar micro-texture balloon technology. Ancora-SB is cleared for use during small bowel enteroscopy procedures.

“We are incredibly pleased to receive FDA 510(k) clearance for the Ancora-SB device, and look forward to seeing the anticipated clinical benefits,” said Mark Rentschler, Aspero Medical CEO. “We believe this novel balloon design will have a significant impact for both caregivers and patients.”

Balloon endoscopy has become the standard of care in the drive to diagnose and treat small bowel disease. Unlike the Aspero Medical Pillar balloon, which is characterized by the addition of a proprietary gripping micro-texture, current balloons are smooth and round, making them prone to slippage. Ineffective balloons are estimated to result in significantly increased healthcare costs annually due to incomplete or lengthened procedures.

“The ever-increasing number of patients suffering with small bowel disease requires that we look to develop innovative diagnostic and treatment options, including devices like the Ancora-SB which is designed to enable more efficient small bowel enteroscopy procedures,” said Dr. Steven Edmundowicz, Chief Medical Officer for Aspero Medical. “We look forward to ensuring that the Ancora-SB is available for all cases where the innovative design can make a difference.”

Ancora-SB, a next-generation balloon overtube for GI endoscopy procedures, was initially developed in part through grant funding from the State of Colorado’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade and through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) SBIR program. Aspero Medical is continuing to innovate in GI endoscopy, and plans to expand the Ancora platform as additional products are brought to market in the near future.

Had a great time at #LSIUSA23 last week networking, listening to pitches, and supporting my #fundraising clients + many of our Octane OC LaunchPad SBDC teams. Of the 30+ pitches I was able to personally sit in on, some of my favorites include:

- MIMOSA Diagnostics (Karen Cross): A cutting-edge medical technology company that specializes in the development of non-invasive diagnostic tools for early detection and monitoring of chronic diseases by painlessly and accurately measure tissue health at the microvascular level.
- Aspero Medical (Mark Rentschler): An innovative company that focuses on creating advanced endoscopic tools for improved treatment of gastrointestinal diseases via their Aspero Balloon Centering System, which enhances visualization and access during endoscopic procedures, increasing diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy.
- TrueCath (Zach Berwick, Ph.D.): This was one of the most clever technologies I've seen for an issue I actually experience: hard to tap veins when getting an IV. Their technology uses a novel pressure system to sense when the catheter finds a vein to instantly and automatically insert the catheter. I'm looking forward to a future of not being a pin cushion for nurses and doctors. 
- Smart Breast Corporation (James Hugg, PhD, EMBA): So many technologies talk about what they hope to do, but Smart Breast was able to demonstrate what they've actually done: save the lives of 600 women by detecting their breast cancer in early stages using their advanced breast imaging technology.
