What's the point of making a new venture fund or company?  Why are we doing this? Here's our story.

Raising a new venture fund, is just like any other startup (see https://lnkd.in/gs5mxtfj).  Our pitch deck [*] provides a solid introduction, but the question we hear most often—and it's not in our deck—is, "Why are you doing this? After an $800M exit, why bother?"

There are logical reasons: startups are all we've ever done, it's a natural career progression, we love engaging with founders and finance experts, and we believe we can do this better.

But those answers don't capture the heart of it. We don't have to do this; we get to do this. It's a privilege. We've been extremely fortunate, and now it's our turn to pay it forward.

We wanted to create the pre-seed/seed fund we wished had invested in us while we were building Signal Sciences. While we are grateful for our previous investors, none of them were operators and were limited in the type of advice they could give.

Our goal is to make sure everyone can join us. Most funds have high minimums and barriers to entry, but we've designed our fund to be accessible to everyone. In Fund I, we had over 90 LPs, some of whom could only invest $5,000. This policy continues with Fund II.

We recognize our inherited advantages and are committed to inclusivity. While it would be easy to raise all the money from our established network, we've intentionally expanded our LP base to be as broad and diverse as possible. We are proud to be the only fund that publicly discloses the demographics of our LP base.

Paying it forward is not only the right thing to do, it's also good business.
