2024 has presented us with many innovative solutions in the vertical farming space. 

The newest to date? 

→ Utilizing geothermal energy methods in vertical farming. 

Freshbay is doing exactly that by building a controlled environment agriculture (CEA) facility in Alberta. 

The facility will utilize cutting-edge technology, such as vertical farming and greenhouse gases, to grow strawberries, tropical fruits, and herbs all year round. 

All by harnessing the power of geothermal energy ⤵️ 

Geothermal energy helps to promote a carbon-neutral footprint but utilizing the heat from the Earth's interior. 

It’s a clean source that can be obtained by drilling wells into geothermal reservoirs close to volcanic regions or tectonic plate borders. 

→ A dependable substitute for fossil fuels since it’s consistently available. 

This solution is another major advancement in the quest for a sustainable future. 

As it not only promises to reduce carbon emissions and fully utilize geothermal energy… 

(Whilst addressing several challenges caused by climate change) 

It is creating 450 new full-time jobs and responding to Canada’s growing demand for fresh local produce. Shout out to freshbay, Vic Reddy, and the team for launching this exciting project.

Last week, Rob Laing shared a great article about trends in the vertical farming space and why now is the best time to build small farms. 

Yes, we all know the amazing benefits small farms can have: 

- Fresh produce 
- Food security 
- Fresh meals 

But how many can say that they know the growth that these tools can have on a personal level? I don’t think many… 

Small farms elevate what food means to our communities: 

- Jobs 
- Events
- Tourism 
- Education 

The access that small farms provide is more than just supporting our environment. 

It’s creating a new ecosystem where community growth is at its centre. 

Where this tech was ten years ago, compared to where it is today, shows how much further we can go if we all work together and utilize this amazing innovation.

Most of your “Fresh” food comes from industrial farms thousands of miles away. 

This is a fact that many of us are oblivious to when we’re buying food.

Most of the “fresh” food you buy at the store is:

- Soggy. 
- Wilted.
- Going off after a few days.

Simply because the clock is ticking toward decomposing from the moment food is harvested. The further away you are from where your food is grown, the harder is it to keep it “fresh”.

This is without diving deep into the other negative aspects of our current agricultural process which:

- Uses 75% of our water.
- Wastes 40% of fresh food. 
- Produces up to 25% of our CO2 emissions.
- Is unable to feed 27 million Americans who live in desert areas.

Although there is no one-size-fits-all solution, it is abundantly clear that we need new tools to feed ourselves in a more resource-efficient way. 

Whether that be through local, indoor farming solutions. Or new and innovative ways to pack, handle, and ship fresh food.

Whatever solution, the distance that food travels needs to be reduced. 

Not only for the environment & food's sake. 

But also for our health!

Babylon’s goal is to do exactly this. 

Bring food production closer to the consumer and increase the nutritional density in the process.

All while reducing the impact of growing food and educating consumers.

Food as medicine is going to be a defining theme of the next decade in Healthcare foodservice.
