Meet Jarvis Ferdinand, Baldor’s Supply Planner with a passion for all things wild and fresh! Jarvis’s career journey began in the East Village at Balducci’s in the late ‘90s, where he first discovered an array of specialty ingredients—from Wagyu beef, sourced directly from Japan, to a mind-blowing 5 LB white truffle from Italy that sparked his curiosity. Born in Trinidad in the Caribbean, this was a completely new world for him. His passion for foraging naturally flourished as he transitioned to working with Urbani Truffles and Caviar, where he deepened his knowledge of wild mushrooms from diverse regions. “Urbani was the biggest importer of wild mushrooms and truffles at the time. They were the first to import fresh porcini from South Africa, along with all sorts of dried wild mushrooms from China. That’s where my passion for wild ingredients began—learning about mushrooms and where they grow all over the world.” What Jarvis enjoys most about working in the food industry? “I always look forward to the changing seasons. Spring is my favorite because that’s when everything wild really pops—from white asparagus in France, Germany, and Holland to morels and ramps here in the U.S.” Jarvis believes what sets Baldor apart from other food distributors is the company’s willingness to embrace risk. “Baldor isn’t afraid to take chances. We were thrilled to exhibit at this year’s International Fresh Produce Association Global Produce & Floral Show, marking our first time exhibiting at the event and unveiling our UrbanRoots rebrand. Our refreshed look and expanded offerings highlight bold, globally inspired flavors, as well as our continued focus on delivering the convenience and quality our customers rely on. One of our newest innovations is Fruit+, a snack pack featuring fresh-cut fruit paired with globally inspired sprinkles and sauces that offers a transportive, flavor-driven experience. We also unveiled our new line of blended, Cantina-style salsas—offering that classic restaurant-style taste and texture, with the added benefit of a longer shelf life for retailers. It was rewarding to see people try our products and smile as they were transported by the bold flavors. Yesterday, we were excited to unveil our new 100,000-square-foot warehouse in Lanham, MD! With a presence in the area since 2012, we today serve more than 1,000 customers across DMV, and this major expansion will allow us to serve even more.
