Detroit Set to Accept Crypto Tax Payments The Michigan city is the largest in the U.S. to support crypto payments for paying city fees and taxes. Crypto's regulatory support is growing. Detroit is set to become the largest U.S. city to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes and other payments, following an announcement from the city's mayor. What's the Scoop? -- Crypto Payments: On Thursday, city officials revealed that Detroit residents will be able to pay taxes and other city fees with cryptocurrency through a platform managed by PayPal. -- Implementation Timeline: This new payment option is expected to be available by mid-2025. Bankless Take: Detroit is now the third city in the U.S., joining Williston, North Dakota, and Miami Lakes, Florida, to accept crypto-based payments. Other major cities, like Miami and New York City, are exploring similar initiatives. Beyond crypto payments, Detroit is also welcoming entrepreneurs to propose blockchain-based civic applications. This move marks yet another promising step toward establishing the U.S. as a powerhouse in the crypto space.

Bankless Take: While Trump has voiced support for crypto, the president-elect still has months before taking office and enacting any changes. But let’s keep in mind that past presidential campaigns have made bold promises that didn’t always translate into immediate action. The crypto community remains hopeful but cautious.

Crypto-Friendly Candidates Sweep Into Office So far, in the House and Senate, the election of pro-crypto candidates outweighs those with anti-crypto positions. What’s the Scoop? -- House Gains: 253 pro-crypto candidates won seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, while 115 candidates expressing anti-crypto positions were elected. -- Senate Gains: The Senate saw 16 pro-crypto candidates elected, with 12 anti-crypto candidates securing seats. -- Majority of Races: In total, across the U.S, pro-crypto candidates have been elected in 45 out of 50 states, with some races still concluding. Bankless Take: Yesterday is shaping up to be a crypto sweep as the majority of elected officials bring pro-crypto or crypto-friendly policy positions with them to office. While a few key races, such as in Arizona, Michigan, and Nevada Senate, are still wrapping up, this wave of supportive officials could signal a critical juncture for our industry in the U.S. For the first election where crypto has ever really been on the ballot, these results appear truly historic.

Michigan Joins the Growing List of States Investing in Crypto with $10M in Ethereum ETF Holdings Strap in. Michigan is set to join the list of states like Florida and Wisconsin, who are setting aside a good amount of money to invest in crypto. What’s the Scoop? Michigan Pension Funds: The Michigan pension fund disclosed that they hold over $10M worth of Ethereum ETF Holdings, the first state pension fund to do so since the Ethereum ETFs went live. Other Holdings: The Michigan Retirement System also previously reported $7 million in Bitcoin ETF investments, showing its ongoing interest in digital assets. Florida announced that it holds over $800M in crypto-related investments Florida's CFO, Jimmy Patronis, appeared on CNBC today, revealing that the state has started making significant investments in the crypto space and now holds some $800 million in crypto-related investments. What’s the Scoop? -- Seeking Optimal Returns: During the interview, Patronis emphasized that cryptocurrency is here to stay. He wants Florida’s investment team equipped with every tool available to maximize returns. -- Growing Interest: Patronis noted that Floridians' interest in cryptocurrency surged after the Bitcoin conference in Miami in 2020, underscoring the event’s impact on the state’s crypto engagement.
