Meet Jinali Mody , the visionary founder behind Banofi Leather , on a mission to safeguard our planet by crafting plant-based leather from banana crop waste. Jinali Mody struggled to find a sustainable leather bag. Being from India, one of the largest exporters of leather, she was cognizant of the environmental impact of this resource-intensive and highly polluting material. She knew that synthetic leather, which promises to be vegan, is also made from petrochemical sources. Noticing a lack of sustainable alternatives, she embarked on a journey towards replacing materials that harm our planet. Jinali leveraged her business experience from McKinsey & Co. and her Master's Degree in Sustainability from the Yale School of the Environment to kick-start this venture. Thus, Banofi Leather emerged with the goal of diminishing the environmental impact of fashion. Their innovative vegan alternative, crafted from banana crop waste, boasts a 90% reduction in water usage compared to animal leather products and results in 90% fewer carbon emissions during production. Addressing the climate crisis demands collaborative efforts across all industries, extending beyond energy, transportation, and carbon capture. In a significant milestone in 2023, Mody's Banofi Leather secured the prestigious $1 million Hult Prize, awarded to student entrepreneurs whose ideas deliver a measurable positive impact on both people and the planet. Further, she clinched the Best Vegan Leather Award from PETA India, underscoring her dedication to sustainable and cruelty-free practices.
