For almost four decades, Benthem Crouwel Architects has been creating innovative, flexible and efficient designs in a variety of scales: from universities, museums, bridges, railway stations, metro lines, offices, housing, malls and urban plans to bicycle racks, tiny houses and cross-over projects with designers. In all designs, Benthem Crouwel seeks a balance between economic, social and ecological interests, with a particular focus on innovation and sustainability.

Benthem Crouwel Architects was founded in 1979 by Jan Benthem and Mels Crouwel. 
Today, partners Pascal Cornips, Daniel Jongtien, Saartje van der Made and Joost Vos lead our international team of some fifty professionals at our Amsterdam based Benthem Crouwel LAB: highly experienced architects, engineers, young trainees and recently graduated designers.

Well known buildings and projects under construction are: Stedelijk Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Anne Frankhuis, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Ziggo Dome, RAI Convention and Exhibition Centre Amsterdam, North/South-metro link in Amsterdam, four metro stations in Paris, and central railway stations Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.

At Benthem Crouwel Architects, flexibility and user experience are at the heart of our designs. We've recently expanded the iconic drivers' building at Amsterdam Central Station, adding 30 square meters to the original 80-square-meter structure. 
 
A single bold incision transforms the building, enhancing daylight and sightlines while preserving its unique character. The new first-floor lounge offers drivers privacy and a 180-degree view, while the ground floor now features an expanded restroom and a new meeting room. 
Completed this spring, the upgraded space is in use since July 2024.

Our design for Brno Main Station is currently on display at an exhibition at Prague Central Station. This exhibition showcases our innovative approach and detailed vision for the future of Brno's railway infrastructure.
 
We are also proud to share that the Central Commission of the Czech Ministry of Transport has approved the project plan for the modernization of the Brno railway junction. This extensive project, with an estimated budget of nearly 73 billion CZK, aims to modernize numerous station buildings and tracks, and includes preparations for high-speed rail (VRT). Construction is anticipated to begin in 2028.

Our project, Museum De Pont in Tilburg, has been featured in the book Industrial Topography | Cultural Clusters | Czech Republic - Europe. This publication underscores the transformative power of adaptive re-use in preserving and revitalizing industrial heritage.
 
Museum De Pont, once a historic wool mill, has been converted into a serene space that beautifully showcases how architecture can transform an industrial site into a cultural hub and enhance the experience of contemporary art.
 
The accompanying exhibition at the Landscape Festival in Prague explores the potential of industrial tourism and the innovative repurposing of industrial spaces into cultural and social clusters. The exhibition is open from June 18th till August 25th at Freight Railway Station, Prague 3.

Together with TotalEnergies and Pon we won the competition for a new Mobility Hub near the Olympic Stadion of Amsterdam! Amsterdam is converting all its 60 gas stations into sustainable hubs to become emission-free by 2030. And we get to design the very first one! Located at Stadionplein in Amsterdam Zuid, E-lympic will be the Mobility Hub of the future.
 
E-lympic will be a modern hub with all the amenities for electric shared transportation, such as fast chargers, charging points for vessels, and other services like restaurants and workspaces.
 
We aim to create more than just a functional location for mobility. E-lympic will be a showcase for the city, a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and connection. Situated near the Olympic Stadium, we honor the rich heritage by incorporating architectural features from the surrounding area into our design. E-lympic will have a modular setup, and through the responsible use of sustainable materials, the building will be easily adapted to meet future needs.
 
In collaboration with TotalEnergies, Pon, City of Amsterdam, local residents, and businesses, we will shape E-lympic over the coming months. We are looking forward to this important first step in Amsterdam’s ambition to become emission free!

Update from Schiphol Airport! Our expansion and renovation project for Lounge 1 is in full swing. In order to further improve the passenger experience at Schiphol we’re adapting passenger routing and expanding facilities such as shops and seating areas. A significant milestone has been reached as we have added part of the existing crew center to the lounge. As of now, passengers can explore this newly opened area, complete with new shops and sanitary facilities.
 
But we're not stopping here! The entire project is being executed in five phases, and we are working diligently on the next stages to complete the transformation of the lounge. Rest assured, throughout the entire renovation process, Lounge 1 will remain open and fully accessible to travelers.

Presenting The District West Lighthouse office, featuring a stunning fully wooden structure. We infused new life into this Sloterdijk office tower with a groundbreaking wooden extension.

DW02 Lighthouse, the first development in District West, has been completed, setting the stage for the area's future redevelopment. Benthem Crouwel Architects created the Masterplan for the large-scale transformation of this highly accessible area, located near the highway and just a stone's throw from the station. 
 
The existing high-rise received a remarkable upgrade, now boasting a spacious 15,700 m² of high-quality office space. We designed this building as the first step in the development of District West. Created for the new way of working: maximum daylight, open office floors, and tangibly sustainable with a distinctive wooden structure. The choice for a fully sustainable wooden structure not only emphasizes the character of District West but also underscores the commitment to an ecologically responsible future.
