Did you know that the water supply network in Zagreb, Croatia is one of the oldest in the world?

At 146 years old, the city set out to modernize the network and implemented a digital twin that helped in the management of its more than 100-year-old water supply network to reduce water losses.

Originally constructed in 1878, at that time, the capacity of the water system was 53.2 liters per second via a 4-kilometer-long pipeline that provides water to 11,150 of the city's 30,000 inhabitants. To cover water services for over 900,000 people across 800 square kilometers, the water supply network was expanded, spanning 3,500 kilometers with seven water sources, and a daily water intake of 310,000 cubic meters.

Over the last two decades, water loss has grown significantly and sharply worsened after the occurrence of earthquakes in 2020. To resolve these losses and modernize the network, Hidroing was tasked to develop a detailed master plan and water loss program, digitalizing the system for optimal water distribution over the next 30 years of operation.

The project team used Bentley software to develop detailed and functioning hydraulic models in just 20 months instead of the expected 36 months. This solution decreased water losses and intake, as well as reduced electricity usage in pump stations.

The city of Joinville in Brazil has experienced some of the worst droughts in the last 30 years which have greatly impacted the lives of people in the community due to low water levels and faulty sanitation.

Keeping clean water flowing for about 600,000 residents in South Brazil and maintaining the quality of life and health for the people in Joinville was the driving force behind this project.

Companhia Águas de Joinville Oficial is the water company that supplies water and sanitation services to the municipality via its water distribution system. CAJ developed a contingency plan to reduce water production on the fragile source while ensuring an equally reliable water supply during drought.

The team used hydraulic modeling and created a digital twin help to evaluate how well the water system is working, as well as check the changes that can be done within the network to figure out what the response will be. The results reduced their water production needs by 170 liters per second, during severe droughts.

With this technology, consistent access to clean water is well within reach for the people in Joinville.

Dubai's newly proposed and eye-catching Green Spine Project has received growing news attention. It got us thinking about another noteworthy project from this desert metropolis: the Dubai Metro. 🚄

Fun fact: This impressive rapid transit rail network transports almost 250 million people annually.

Until 2016, the Dubai Metro held the record for the longest driverless metro network worldwide, stretching 75 kilometers. As people travel along the network, they can access shopping malls and other commercial areas integrated with the Dubai Metro stations, making them hubs for travel, leisure, and shopping.

WS Atkins designed an underground metro station in Dubai Mall, adding to the allure of the city's Green and Red lines. The USD 2.9 billion project was constructed to improve traffic flow, and separate shoppers from commuters. The project team faced design challenges such as limited space, shallow foundations, and a small utility tunnel. The team used Bentley software to model the site's complex geometry, avoiding on-site measuring. With accurate readings, they managed to decrease construction waste by 45% and reduce material waste by 65%. They shared over 100 files of different formats with the team to improve collaboration and finish the design one month early.

Geothermal exploration is on the rise in Africa as the continent seeks more sustainable energy alternatives.

Kasane Hot Spring in Botswana may have the potential to provide sustainable, reliable geothermal energy to support population growth. With discharge temperatures between 43 and 50 degrees Celsius, researchers are exploring if the hot spring can provide consistent power that is not dependent on seasonal rainfall variations or daily weather conditions.

Botswana International University of Science & Technology (BIUST) conducted a detailed geophysical analysis of the hot spring to evaluate its energy generation capabilities. The team examined the site, measuring 22km deep, located at the confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers. Capturing, combining, and analyzing numerous types of geophysical data helped the team gain a deeper understanding of the risks and benefits of the area by creating an intuitive geophysics model within a single platform.

BIUST is continuing to study the hot spring to gain a deeper understanding of its capabilities. The hot spring could become a clean, renewable energy source that would replace aging and polluting power infrastructure in the region and create new investment opportunities while accommodating increased power demand.
