We've taken a look back at 2023 at Beringea - a year of change and adaptation, but also a busy year for exits and follow-on funding across the portfolio...

The global venture industry tightened its collective belt in 2023 - Crunchbase estimates that VC funding globally fell by 42% across the first three quarters of the year - so we worked alongside the leadership teams of our portfolio companies to adjust to this new environment.

Nonetheless, the ambition and resilience of entrepreneurs shone through. Monica Vinader Ltd achieved a landmark investment from Bridgepoint, which brought to a close our thirteen-year journey with the company, Flywheel.io achieved a notable $54m Series D co-led by Novalis LifeSciences LLC and NVentures (NVIDIA's venture capital arm). 

We also continued to welcome new pioneers into the portfolio, with Dentologie and Optilogic Inc. two notable additions to the Beringea U.S. portfolio.

🌿 We're delighted to announce our latest addition to the UK portfolio - ICEBERG DATA LAB, a platform tackling the climate crisis and biodiversity loss 🌿

Our UK funds have led Iceberg Data Lab's $10m Series A - the round was also backed by MAIF Avenir and AXA Investment Managers. The business provides climate and biodiversity data solutions to financial institutions including Natixis, Amundi, and HSBC.

Biodiversity particularly is becoming a hot-button issue for regulators, corporates, and investors as economies wake up to the risks associated with nature loss. The WEF recently reported that $44 trillion of economic value generation – over half the world’s total GDP – is potentially at risk because of the dependence of business on nature and its services.

Piotr Bukanski, who led the deal for Beringea, commented: “Financial institutions are having to adapt rapidly to a complex and evolving environmental regulation, driven by global consensus on the need to tackle the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

“Iceberg Data Lab is unique in partnering granular environmental data with comprehensive, AI-enabled solutions in a scalable way. This enables asset managers, asset owners and banks to comply with regulation, streamline reporting, launch new products including biodiversity-focused ETFs, and ultimately drive impact at scale. What an exciting day for SAY Detroit and the children of Detroit's northeast side! 🏨🎉

Beringea U.S. co-founder Charlie Rothstein was on hand in his role as Chairman of the Say Detroit Board of Directors for the grand opening of the Matthew and Kelly Stafford & Friends Education Center at SAY Detroit Play Center at Lipke Park.

Situated on nearly 15 acres in the Osborn community in northeast Detroit, the facility was formerly an abandoned City of Detroit recreation center for Detroit youth, with academics as its cornerstone. Since opening its doors in 2015, SAY Play has welcomed after-school students from one of Detroit's most challenged neighborhoods to enjoy first-rate academic, athletic & arts programs, in partnership with Detroit's major sports teams and philanthropists.
