The BIOMILQ team recently stepped away from the world of mammary biotechnology to explore the city we're headquartered in: Durham, North Carolina!
 
We immersed ourselves in the heart of Durham through a food and walking tour. From savoring soul food to ice cream and everything in between, we had the perfect kick-off to the festive season. 
 
Each stop on the tour unfolded unique narratives as we listened to the local restaurant owners share their stories behind building their businesses. This served as a powerful source of inspiration for our team as we gear up for the new year's opportunities! 
 
We're thankful for a team that embraces new adventures, has fun while doing it, and appreciates good food.

Our CEO and co-founder, Leila Strickland, PhD, was recently a part of The Wall Street Journal's latest Future of Everything podcast hosted by Alex Ossola. 
 
Breast milk has long been known as the gold standard of #infantnutrition, as it brings a plethora of nutritional and functional benefits to rapidly growing and developing babies. However, the fact stands that the majority of babies are not receiving the recommended exposure to breast milk – and we know that is not from a lack of trying from caretakers (to list a few reasons as to why someone may not be able to breastfeed: lack of parental leave, lack of familial support, low milk supply, latching issues, food allergies, adoptive families, and many many more). 
 
Early life nutrition products are facing an unmet need for premium ingredients that bring the nutritional profile of their products closer to breast milk. By utilizing the unique potential of human mammary cells and #cellculture technology, BIOMILQ is working to produce functional human milk components to nourish healthier babies and bring more of the functional benefits of breast milk to early life nutrition products. 
 
Human mammary cells have the potential to produce many types of developmentally beneficial bioactive components that cannot be produced from other cell types or other scientific methods – and we cannot wait to share with you what we envision as BIOMILQ's first components!

And that’s a wrap for conferences in 2023! Big thank you to the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit, Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia and their teams for putting together a wonderful week of events in Singapore. One I would love to highlight is the Women in Food and AgTech event hosted by Brian Frank FTW Ventures in partnership with Foodbytes by Rabobank, Thai Wah Ventures, Gullspång Re:food, Enterprise Singapore, and Wendy Chng Petit with Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia. It was incredible to meet with so many people in Asia who are passionate about supporting female-founded companies like BIOMILQ. I'm hoping to see more events like these in 2024.

When The Good Food Institute and the APAC Society for Cellular Agriculture announced the APAC Regulatory Coordination Forum and their MOU last week, Good Food Institute APAC Managing Director Mirte Gosker said, “The location of this historic announcement was no coincidence. In recent years, Singapore has invested the necessary resources to make the city-state a welcoming ecosystem for food innovation and multilateral collaboration. This MOU is the latest proof that the Lion City is trading its traditional reliance on food imports for a new role as the place where the alternative protein sector’s biggest decisions are forged, announced, and exported to the world.”

Love to see countries like Singapore that have created a welcoming system for food innovation and companies like BIOMILQ, and we hope to see you again in Singapore in 2024!

Having an inspiring week in Singapore at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit and Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia. One of my favorite panels so far was on meeting nutritional needs in Asia. Moderated by Gary Scattergood with Yanjing Wang, Corine Tap, Jeya Henry, and Weitze Ooi: there was a big focus on early life nutrition, and how they are prioritizing innovation and access for new, nutritious food products for the younger generations throughout Asia. When asked about the future, Corine Tap noted: "having a good start in life for children with access to the right nutrition is essential for the next generations to thrive, and there is still a lot of work to be done." BIOMILQ couldn't agree more. 

It has been incredible to hear from so many investors, strategic partners, and companies from all sectors throughout Asia who support BIOMILQ's mission. Please feel free to reach out to learn more about us if I didn't get to a chance to meet you yet!

Recently, we've collaborated on a project with one of our neighbors in Research Triangle Park, Tiamat Sciences Corp.

This project presents exciting opportunities for scalability in the cell-based food industry where cell culture media is a huge cost driver.

Next stop: Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit in Singapore!

Recently our CEO and co-founder, Leila Strickland, PhD, and two of BIOMILQ's team leads, Victoria Slaughter and Zack Holmes, PhD, attended the International Milk Genomics Consortium Symposium (IMGC) in Ireland! 

IMGC is an annual symposium that features the most cutting-edge research and discoveries in milk science and its applications for human health. 

This was BIOMILQ's 3rd year attending the symposium. This time around, we presented two scientific posters on some of our latest research, and Leila Strickland, PhD gave a scientific talk highlighting the benefits of our mammary-based production platform compared with alternative technologies. 

With worldwide attendance from the leaders moving milk forward in academia and industry, BIOMILQ has returned from the symposium energized by new ideas and a growing list of collaborations that will guide our strategy going forward.
