Also, a really inspiring presentation from the Bridgewest Ventures NZ Ventures Managing Partner, Saum Vahdat on the vision Bridgewest Group have for biotech in NZ and how it will benefit New Zealanders.  Great to hear also the nod to the pioneering work that is happening every day at the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research which has given birth to NZ's growing cell, viral and mRNA therapy capability.

Congratulations to Dr Tol Trimborn and the rest of the CellPoint team on their recent $131M+ sale to Galapagos! 

CAR T-cell therapy has revolutionized the treatment of blood cancers and has saved countless lives while also lowering treatment times and reducing the harmful side effects associated with traditional therapies. Under existing approved indications alone, CAR T-cell therapy has the potential to be the new standard of care and deliver hope to over one million patients around the world per year.
 
As promising as CAR T-cell therapy is, there are significant bottlenecks in the production process of CAR T-cells that significantly lowers the availability of treatment, lengthens patients’ treatment time, and increases costs associated with the actual therapy. A patient’s blood sample may be shipped from one country to another for CAR T-cell manufacture and then shipped back to the patient for infusion. Existing manual manufacture of CAR T-cells requires upwards 50 hours of operator time. To reduce operator time, production cost and timelines, BioOra and CellPoint are hard at work developing automated means of production for CAR T-cell therapy. Utilizing closed system cocoons, manufactured by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Lonza, processes being developed by BioOra and CellPoint will be able reduce the time of production and treatment to twelve days versus several weeks using conventional methods. BioOra and CellPoint will also increase the global reach of CAR T-cell treatment for cancer patients enabling future access and more effective point of treatment care for hundreds of thousands of cancer patients to this life-saving treatment.
 
We at BioOra are confident that the continued leadership of Dr Tolleiv Trimborn combined with the significant capital and expertise brought to the table by Galapagos NV will enable CellPoint to continue developing this revolutionary production process and eventually enable them to scale their business and treat tens of thousands of patients.
