From building my first desk to getting our first license! Early life at Bitpanda

I am now a little more than 5 years at Bitpanda, and it’s a natural time to look at how this amazing firm developed and what I was able to contribute. My vision from the beginning was to build bridges between the classical world of oversight and investing to the new emerging technologies and possibilities with crypto currencies. 

My first task 5 years ago (in the startup environment!) was actually building my own desk and drawers, fresh from the furniture shop! This ‘grassroots’  approach to work has been with me ever since, though it hasn’t  so much manual work! 

Our founders had a vision at the start that users should be able to send money directly from Bitpanda to pay bills. This was my first opportunity to bridge between crypto investments and using those earnings to pay bills directly. So I started to gather everything needed to create Bitpanda Payments from the ground up. Creating Policies, finding banking partners, hiring a team, writing the license application, defining controls and processes, and so much more. The desk was certainly easier to build!

Finally we filed the application and received the Payments license in just 4 months (setting a new record) and also started our active approach working with the FMA. From my experience in the Chamber of Commerce, I knew that building the bridge between the regulator and the crypto industry will be essential in order for the crypto industry to mature, and Bitpanda is proud to have always worked closely with the regulator.

The single greatest thing at Bitpanda have been the people I have been able to work with. Christian S. is a regulatory miracle worker and has been our first Compliance Officer and Risk Officer who previously worked at the FMA. Second Lukas Enzersdorfer-Konrad Enzerdorfer-Konrad who everybody knows has since become the driving force of getting things done at Bitpanda. For Bitpanda Payments my special thanks goes to Alvyda Simonyan, CAMS, CSS Simonyan. She took the brave step to be one of the first Anti Money Laundering Officers in Europe who actually defined and controlled processes in a licensed firm building the bridge between crypto payments and classical payments. Over the years many joined us to build this bridge and keep it steady.   

I want to thank everyone who has been involved in growing this business — from the Pandas to the regulators — as our determined and pragmatic approach has changed the game of Finance. It has been an exhilarating 5 years, and I look forward to what the next 5 will bring.

This week we officially kicked off our biggest partnership ever, as the official crypto partner of FC Bayern München.
