The medical professional liability (MPL) industry has faced challenges in generating underwriting profits since 2014.

While there are signs of improvement with better rate adequacy and a decline in pandemic-related exposure, the sector still grapples with volatility due to increased severity from large verdicts.

Fortunately, investment returns are aiding surplus growth as reinvestment rates have bounced back from extreme lows. The MPL carriers exhibit a robust overall balance sheet strength, marked by redundant loss reserves.

Pete Chandler will be stepping down in his position as CEO of BMS Re, transitioning to a strategic, client-focused role as Vice-Chair of BMS Re. Pete will remain a Director on the US board. 

Andrew Wheeler and Russell D. McGuire have been appointed as interim co-CEO’s, responsible for the broking teams across the US, executing continued growth strategies, and ensuring a smooth leadership transition.

Pete comments: “Now is the right time for me to step away from the day-to-day CEO role of BMS Re having achieved what we set out to do when I joined the business. I am extremely proud of what we have built, we have grown into a business that we are all incredibly proud of and it has been my enormous privilege to have led it and worked alongside my amazing colleagues. I cannot wait to go back to what I love the most, helping our clients better their businesses and working closely with our fantastic teams across the US and around the world.

I will be focusing my time on the company’s key clients and working directly with them in assisting with their growth plans, capital requirements and supporting Nick Cook, Group CEO, to put in place the next generation of leaders within this fantastic company”.

Over the past 4 years, Pete has brought about significant growth for BMS Re, with the Group now a force in the global reinsurance broking space with offices across the US, London, Bermuda, Turkey, Latin America, and Asia.
