My husband and I were both architects specialising in the education sector. Ian was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2017 and died in 2022 aged 82. We had moved to Dorset in 2007 on his retirement. Here he created, planted and maintained a wonderful 2 acre garden and a 2 acre wood as well as designing an extension to the house and for our son’s first two houses. We led a very busy and active social and cultural life, grew our own vegetables and soft fruit and had a small flock of chickens. I am convinced that his slow but inexorable and heartbreaking mental and physical decline was slowed down by us having led such a busy and active life both physically and mentally. We continued this for as long as possible after his diagnosis, including going on holiday to Vietnam, and on study tours in this country. By 2019 he no longer knew who I was or indeed that he had been married, but he still enjoyed my company and , until the restrictions of Covid, going out to lectures, visits and meals with friends. I strongly feel that our DIY (Do-It-Yourself) version of CST helped me as well as him. While each person and each carer’s experience of dementia is unique, I hope that I can bring to Brain+ my experience of caring for my husband, and of the organisations that helped us and the difficulties that we encountered. Liz in Brain+ Liz is our UK patient advocate helping us in many ways. Her firsthand experience of caring for a family member with dementia is an invaluable asset to developing our products. Age UK is one of the largest UK charities for seniors a leading force in the sector, offering a wide range of services and advocacy for older people, and probably the largest provider of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) in the UK.
