The Breakthrough Victoria Fund is a $2 billion investment by the Victorian Government to drive investment in research and innovation and catalyse new projects in partnership with knowledge institutes and industry stakeholders. These investments will be anchored at key employment and innovation precincts and will support projects with strong potential to drive long-term industry growth, including the commercialisation of new innovations and technologies in Victoria.

Our Chair, the Hon. John Brumby AO, today announced Breakthrough Victoria’s $5 million investment into FLAIM Systems and got to experience their fully immersive virtual firefighting training system first-hand! 

Using VR training reduces firefighters’ exposure to potentially carcinogenic substances in training. It also benefits the environment by reducing water consumption, carbon emissions and PFAS foam usage.  

Born out of research at Deakin University, FLAIM’s innovative training system combines the VR headset with haptic technology, which creates an experience of touch by applying forces, vibrations or motions to the user – they can feel the heat of the fire and force of the hose!

Breakthrough Victoria CEO Grant Dooley today joined founder and CEO Richard Parsons as he demonstrated this breakthrough #innovation to Victorian Treasurer the Hon. Tim Pallas MP.
