A big day yesterday at McMillan Coppersmiths and Fabricators ! 🥃 Two beautifully handcrafted copper stills - a wash still and a spirit still - embarked on a 85-mile journey yesterday, heading towards their final destination at Ardgowan Distillery Company Limited . Made using traditional techniques dating back to the 1800s, these whisky stills will be at the heart of Ardgowan's distillery, currently under construction at Inverkip, Scotland. Its great to see a major milestone being achieved in the project where BRIGGS and McMillan have been instrumental in designing, engineering and building Ardgowan's new distillery. Designed with sustainability at its core, we have designed a process that integrates heat recovery through Thermal Vapour Recompression (TVR), alongside McMillan’s beautifully handcrafted copper distillation equipment. It’s been fantastic working so closely with Ardgowan and our project partners to bring this vision to life. Our team are currently working hard to complete the mechanical installation of the dry goods area, as well as accelerating the electrical install. Earlier this week, Scott Davies and Liam Deery visited the University of Nottingham to deliver a practical workshop on hygienic process design and Cleaning in Place (CIP). Our workshop delivered to Food Science/Food Production Management and MSc Brewing students covered a range of practical activities to reinforce the importance of an earlier lecture on hygienic design and CIP. A key part of the workshop was to allow the students to see and experience the research pilot brewery, which was built by Briggs of Burton and offered valuable insight to the students. Inspiring the next generation of coppersmiths at McMillan Coppersmiths and Fabricators . Marking yesterday's Make UK 's National Manufacturing Day, we welcomed students from East Lothian Works to McMillan, where they could experience first-hand the craft of fabricating copper distillation equipment. Since joining BRIGGS Group in 2019, McMillan now recruits up to 4 apprentices a year, each joining the team to learn the fundamental principles of fabrication and welding. The day began with an introduction from Robert Buxton (CEO), followed by sustainability and apprentice talks, and a production tour, from both the BRIGGS and McMillan team.
