Britten-Norman is a privately owned British aircraft manufacturer and aviation services provider. The company is the sole independent commercial aircraft producer in the United Kingdom, with a historic home located at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight.

Britten-Norman is the UK’s only sovereign aircraft manufacturer, having designed and delivered aircraft for over 60 years. 
 
Our primary product, the Islander, is one of the world’s most successful and enduring aircraft designs. The Islander is versatile and durable, able to operate with ease in challenging environments. It can take off and land almost anywhere, including beaches and jungle clearings. This has made the Islander world renowned as a trusted work horse. By providing lifeline and life-saving services, the Islander has long served as the backbone of communities around the world. 
 
Innovation is important to Britten-Norman. We hold a wide variety of aviation approvals and specialise in bringing the latest aerospace technologies to market. Some of our current R&D projects include partnering with fellow UK SME’s to develop new capabilities for our aircraft, including electric and autonomous operations.

A team of UK companies led by Stratospheric Platforms Ltd (SPL), a Non-Terrestrial Networks telecoms developer, has won a significant contract trialling advanced airborne 5G connectivity from a Britten-Norman Islander. 
 
 Britten-Norman will be providing key design and trials support for the project, with Marshall Futureworx providing important cooling systems technology.
 
The first phase of the contract will see SPLs 5G airborne phased array integrated to a BN2T-4S Islander, with flight trials due to begin in July 2024. 
The aircraft will operate from our Solent Airport aircraft maintenance (MRO) facility, with the mission to be performed over the North Sea. The 5G phased array will be linked via a backhaul link to the Adastral Tower in Suffolk, England, from which the telecommunications and mission equipment will operate.

New UK-built Islander update!

The first new UK-built aircraft currently in production at Bembridge will be bound for the Falkland Islands Government Aviation Service (FIGAS) – a loyal Britten-Norman customer – who are celebrating their 75th anniversary in December 2023. FIGAS representative Kurt Whitney, visited our manufacturing facilities to inspect the progress of the production- including the front wing spar and aileron.

We are honoured as an organisation to be a home to many ex-servicemen and women as well as a longstanding partner of HM Armed Forces. We pledge our gratitude to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives in the fight for our freedom.

As part of our drive towards sustainable aviation, Britten-Norman is working closely with industry partners to deliver our Green Futures initiative. 

In addition to work in the hydrogen sector for the piston Islander, we have been reviewing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for our turboprop aircraft as an alternative to conventional hydrocarbons.

Green Futures now moves one step closer to reality for the Islander with the announcement by Rolls-Royce of its plans to introduce SAF on the Model 250 engines which are fitted to the BN2T and BN2T-4S twin turboprop versions of the Islander. 

This change will allow Britten-Norman to continue a commitment to a zero-carbon, sustainable future for our customers, helping them to protect delicate ecosystems whilst boosting the local economy.
