It is imperative that the built environment decarbonises, and quickly. As COP29 continues in Baku, we’re highlighting King’s Cross Roadmap to Net Zero. The consortium behind the King’s Cross quarter has committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2035. This is a significant redevelopment in London comprising a mixture of office, retail, and residential buildings around King’s Cross Railway Station. Buro Happold’s sustainability and energy experts are proud to assist in this effort by developing a robust definition of net zero carbon and to set out the decarbonisation pathway to achieve this across the whole campus. The net zero carbon (NZC) roadmap aims to identify the key retrofit measures necessary for office buildings at the King’s Cross development to achieve net zero status. A robust NZC definition and methodology for the development was created, based on the UKGBC’s framework, and aligned to ‘Paris Proof’ 1.5C carbon reduction targets. Retrofit, material reuse and the circular economy – how can we, as individuals, play our part? Find out more in this week’s ‘Sandbox’ FOMO5... We can all adopt the basic principles of retrofit across our existing assets to help tackle the climate crisis. Examples include making more sustainable changes in our homes, mending rather than replacing, to upcycling a piece of IKEA furniture (there’s even websites dedicated to change of use for older pieces!). In our most recent episode of ‘Sandbox’, our panel explores this idea, along with the importance of re-using materials within the circular economy. Darren Conboy, Associate, Buro Happold, said: “It's easy to be tempted to take things and use them and throw them away and actually there is a much more promising future for a lot of the materials we have, and it's the same for existing buildings as it is for furniture.” Ana Araujo, Partner, Buro Happold, added: “The next step for us as an industry is to create a real economy around materials. “We have this amazing built stock that is out there, which was probably built in a time when we had different needs as a society. Why – and how – are we assisting with the decarbonization of the Empire State Building? As COP29 unfolds in Baku, we’re highlighting the decarbonization of the Empire State Building. By demonstrating successful climate action at one of the world’s most iconic buildings, the Empire State Realty Trust (ESRT) and Buro Happold aim to inspire widespread decarbonization across the built environment. In response to New York City’s Local Law 97 – climate legislation that includes fines for missed emissions targets for buildings – ESRT developed a bold program that would help define replicable and scalable solutions to address its buildings’ energy demands and supply. As the lead consultant on this large-scale multi-stakeholder project, our team of experts worked with various collaborators to develop effective pathways by which ESRT can achieve net zero operational carbon emissions by 2030 for the Empire State Building and 2035 for the rest of their commercial portfolio. This effort involves several strategies like energy modeling, economic assessments and technology reviews. To mark World Cities Day, our Riyadh office hosted an event exploring innovative ways for cities to combat desertification by enhancing urban resilience. Our speakers discussed how Riyadh city is adopting cross-sector strategies to expand urban greenery, effectively mitigating the impacts of desertification while enhancing broader ecological systems. Aligned with UN-Habitat's World Cities Day theme, this event emphasised youth-driven initiatives and convened experts and stakeholders to discuss the pressing issue of desertification. This focus is particularly pertinent as Riyadh prepares to host the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in December 2024, marking the first such event in the Kingdom. The High Line, one of New York City's most popular attractions, exemplifies the brilliance of creative adaptive reuse. Originally a rail line, dating back to the mid-1800s, the High Line was once part of Manhattan’s bustling West Side, serving the meatpacking district, until falling into disuse in 1980. Today, the High Line is a catalyst for significant development, thanks to Friends of the High Line 's vision to transform the derelict structure in a community space for nature, culture, and art. It was essential to create a design that would marry the industrial past represented by the High Line with a sustainable future for the site, within this modern metropolis. Buro Happold created two structures to fulfil this ethereal vision – the Flyover is an elevated steel walkway engineered so as to appear to float above the main path, and the Cutout is a steel mesh deck providing views down to 30th Street below. Through this transformation, the High Line has become a model of adaptive reuse, blending New York’s industrial heritage with contemporary design to create a dynamic public space that inspires sustainable urban development.
