New #atrialfibrillation guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Joint Committee are out!  

Selected picks from the perspective of atrial fibrillation prevention and advancing earlier detection among risk populations. 

The guideline:

✔ Emphasizes risk factor management throughout atrial fibrillation disease progression. 
✔ Introduces new disease stages that emphasizes atrial fibrillation as a progressive disease. Disease stages begin from being at-risk of atrial fibrillation. 
✔ Highlights the importance of utilizing a variety of strategies at different stages, ranging from prevention, lifestyle and risk factor modification, screening, and therapy.
✔ Recognizes that future research is needed on how prevention and modification of risk factors can be incorporated into daily clinical practice.
 
Our key takeaways:
 
↗  A clearer focus on prevention in atrial fibrillation is welcome due to the growing burden of atrial fibrillation and the growth of underlying risk factors (hypertension, diabetes etc.) 
↗ The delayed diagnostics and the often asymptomatic nature of the disease makes prevention critical to reduce atrial fibrillation onset, progression, and adverse outcomes (such as ischemic strokes).
↗  The field needs to be more proactive in providing evidence that patients at highest risk of developing atrial fibrillation would benefit from screening and preventive action. 
↗  Health inequity needs more focus in atrial fibrillation research.
