Please meet Nathalia Jean-Pierre, MBA, our Oncology Patient Care Manager based in Orlando, FL, who brings compassionate care to our patients.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞?
I’m a bridge between patient care and our COE providers. My passion is community health, so helping patients understand their benefits, where to go and how to get help is a key reason why I came to Carrum.

I was born and raised in Long Island, NY in a Haitian household - that means everyone lived together! There’s a sense of community when you live with nine family members, you ensure everyone is taken care of. I inherited the drive to help people from my Mom, who is my biggest influence.

𝐀𝐬 𝐚 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦?
Black women face so many barriers to accessing early, high quality care. When my Mom went through her breast cancer journey, she had no clue where to start and would have gone to the local hospital if I hadn’t intervened and navigated her to the best cancer care center.

I am a mom of three boys and each one of my pregnancies has been horrifying. Having to advocate for myself was hard. During my last pregnancy, I had to switch doctors four times because I faced discrimination and it was tough to find someone I was comfortable with. One ultrasound tech dismissed my pain during the scan. Another doctor demanded upfront payment of $13,000 before they even confirmed my pregnancy, but wanted to charge me for delivery before they saw me. A third clinic would cancel appointments literally minutes before, 5 times in a row. 

It got to where I wrote a letter for my kids and gave it to my husband, in case I didn’t make it through. Thankfully my fourth doctor was respectful and receptive. I’ve had to learn to advocate for myself, my family and my kids. 

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡?
Feel empowered. Embrace self-advocacy with unwavering boldness. Too often, our reluctance to speak out stems from fear of being misunderstood or labeled as aggressive.

I recently had the pleasure of leading a panel conversation with Kerin Adelson and Kristin Craig on the State of Oncology Benefits. While everyone should watch the full recording below (shameless plug), here are my key takeaways:
🏪 Employers are asking for a “𝐨𝐧𝐞-𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩” benefits solution. This popped consistently in conversations with employers struggling with point solution fatigue. Employers want a seamless experience for their members with cancer; instead, cancer patients are often left managing administrative burdens, figuring out who to call and what services they have available.
💡 We need solutions that provide an integrated, coordinated experience. While we still have a lot of work to do, it’s our goal at Carrum Health to build a platform that gets patients the support they need when they need it–virtual second opinions, treatment, psychosocial support, etc.

👀 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 are top areas of focus. We asked attendees which parts of the cancer continuum they’re most focused on. The clear winners were “treatment” (49%) and “screening and early detection” (44%). Not surprising given the rising cost of treatment and the lack of transparent quality and cost data. And while screening and early detection aren’t new, they're back in the spotlight as a key opportunity to drive better outcomes and lower overall costs.
🔎 While survivorship and end-of-life care had far fewer votes (only 2%), they're huge opportunities to reduce costs and improve outcomes. Spending spikes astronomically in the last months of life – and many people don't have their end-of-life wishes documented or followed. Conversely, as more people survive and live long after a cancer diagnosis, survivorship is critical – especially for employers who can help support the long-lasting physical, financial, and psychosocial impacts of a diagnosis.

🏥 Centers of Excellence is the top solution of interest. When asked what type of solution they’re most interested in, 42% indicated centers of excellence (COE). In comparison, 24% concierge/navigation, 18% screening, 10% genetic testing, and 6% second opinion. It has become clear that cancer COEs must deliver not just improved patient experience and quality outcomes, but also need to take costs into account. And while calculating savings across months of cancer treatment is messier than for a knee replacement, 𝐂𝐎𝐄𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞-𝐚𝐝𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞. Employers can be partners for defining the Value on Investment of any cancer solution and collaborating on key metrics such as absenteeism, quality of life, mental health, and more.
