The IPPR has produced a report on “Cultivating a Fair Transition for Farming” in the UK. In summary, the report suggests that successive governments’ failure to meaningfully address the climate crisis and support farmers has put the UK’s food security under threat. Some of the themes highlighted include: 
🌱 Climate change and biodiversity loss are a major driver of food insecurity both in the UK and around the world.
🌱 Environmental action and food security are two sides of the same coin.
🌱 Our food system has become increasingly wasteful, processed and environmentally damaging.

The result: nutritious, year-round tomatoes produced sustainably, promoting food security and supporting agriculture’s net zero transition.

#Robotics are providing revolutionary solutions the agricultural sector. Rising labour costs, restrictions on migrant labour and reluctance for farm work are contributing to the labour shortages challenging #agriculture. The range of robotic applications in agriculture are ever growing as the technologies continue to advance, from simple #laboursaving solutions to #precisionfarming products minimising inputs and human error. 

Seeing the immense #impact that robots can have on everyday tasks on the farm, we will continue to invest in companies disrupting, enhancing and streamlining sustainable agricultural production. 

A great example is Burro, a fully autonomous robot assisting labour-intensive movement of cargo for fruit and vegetable harvesting. The robots can:
-         Increase labour #efficiency by 30-50% 
-         Collect data through computer vision and machine learning 
-         One robot can assist 6-8 workers harvest 30-40% more

The FAO estimates that one third of food produced globally is lost or wasted! It is currently estimated that the EU wastes 59m tonnes of food annually, emitting 252m tonnes of CO2 equivalents, while the UK alone wastes 9.5m tonnes each year, emitting 25m tones of CO2 equivalents. Governments are fighting to lower this wastage, evidenced by the European Commission’s recent proposal for legally binding targets to reduce food waste by 30% by 2030.

The EU has just voted to adopt the Nature Restoration Law, which seeks to restore 20% of the EU’s land and marine ecosystems by 2030, rising to 90% by 2050. It also stands to provide financial support to farmers and fishermen, against a backdrop of a £19.4bn gap for protecting and restoring biodiversity.

We are delighted to see that the European Commission has proposed its first ever soil law, defining soil health and providing a framework towards sustainably protecting and restoring soils, in turn improving food security and mitigating climate change. Healthy soils host 25% of the planet’s biodiversity and are the 2nd largest carbon pool on the planet. They are essential for human health and wellbeing, safe and nutritious food and clean drinking water. However, more than 60% of EU soils are currently degraded, negatively impacting crop fertility, yield, pest resistance and food nutritional quality.

At Cibus, we have joined the fight to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees and to transition to #netzero. #Naturalcapital is a core part of this, and one area in the supply chain we feel has been given less focus is the production of the trees required to offset carbon.

Our investments in WITHCOTT GROUP PTY LTD and Alba Trees Plc go part way to addressing the need for tree seedlings into a fast growing “carbon farming” strategy. It is our aim to grow these businesses organically and acquisitively to address the demand for trees, shrubs and hedgerows, whilst striking the important balance between #carbonoffsetting and #foodproduction.
